I have taken the ride down Haleakala with Maui Easy Riders four times now, on four successive trips to Maui. Of all the paid activities my wife and I have done, from Molokini Snorkel Tours to Zip lining to Haleakala Star Gazing, this is the only one we ever felt the desire to repeat.
I can truthfully say those four trips down the volcano have been four of the best days I've spent on Maui. I highly recommend this particular Tour!
I am old, fat, and horribly out of shape. Before my first ride I was worried I might not be able to ride a bike for 90+ minutes. I worried that the bike seat would be uncomfortable. I also worried that it wouldn't be safe. And since I have a huge head, I worried that they wouldn't have a bike helmet big enough for me.
It turned out I had nothing to worry about. The route is all downhill except for one 500 yard portion, and you can get off the bike and walk it up that little hill. Since it was almost entirely downhill and the bicycle seats are really big and comfortable, riding for 90+ minutes was no problem. They stop periodically as you proceed down the mountain so you get a chance to take some photos and stretch your legs.
The tour is as safe as you could possibly want. They even had a bicycle helmet big enough for my massive head.
It's safe because you get to ride as fast or slow as you want. I go slow, really slow. I'm always the last guy in the group. But it's totally cool, there is no pressure whatsoever to ride faster than you want to or are comfortable with.
Another reason why it is safe is that the tours are limited to six people and there is a support van that trails the group to block traffic from behind. Plus, the bikes are expertly maintained and easy to handle, even for a non-bike rider like myself.
You should know that no tour company is allowed to start their ride actually inside the National Park. But don't worry, this tour starts as high as allowed. On the way up you will learn a lot about Maui. Billy and his team share facts about Maui's flora and fauna and tell all kinds of great stories you won't hear anywhere else.
The tour includes a stop in Makawao, with enough time to visit to enjoy a donut and check out some of the shops in the little cowboy town.
On one of our trips down the mountain it started to rain. But it was no problem, Billy had rain gear in the van. That's just one example of how well thought out his whole operation is. They also have water in the Van should you need a bottle.
They say the ride is around 2 hrs long, with 90 minutes or so of riding and maybe something like 30 minutes kicking around Makawao town.
But you know, to me it feels like the ride is so much longer. When you are sailing down that mountain, catching glimpses of the island an ocean below you, time seems to passing in slow motion.
I am writing this review just a few days after the horrible firestorm that wiped out the city of Lahaina. I am beyond heartbroken that so many people have died and so many homes destroyed and families displaced. I humbly and sincerely pray for all those affected.
I hope all those small businesses in Lahaina that were destroyed find some way to come back. And I hope visitors are allowed back soon so that the many other tourist-dependent businesses all around the island that survived can continue to operate.
I wish all the best to Billy and his crew at Maui Easy Riders. I pray that they can somehow hold on and make it through this difficult time because they are the Absolute Best at...

Read moreThis was a very cool trip!! We really didn't know what to expect as we had done our research as to which company seemed to be the "right" one for us to descend from Haleakala. Maui Easy Riders was a SUPERB choice!!
Booking with the owner Billy was great as he prepared me for our adventure over the phone. The morning of the excursion, we met our guides, Charlotte and Jon, who proved to be an absolute hoot! They alieved any anxiety and brought some great history lessons as we trekked up the mountain.
My wife and I were celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary and the last time we were in Hawaii was for our honeymoon, 38 years prior. Charlotte and Jon made us feel special. Unlike many other companies, Maui Easy Riders only allows 6 people per session, so it was easy to get to know your fellow travelers and we became close friends in a very short time.
They have a specially built cruiser bike that has a huge, extremely comfortable seat and and massive disc brakes for both wide tires. The ride is exceptional and you feel very much in control. There is no "push" for you to speed down the mountain, and until everyone was comfortable with their "sled", the downhill journey was held at your own pace. The van follows you down the mountain and runs interference for cars that might be coming up to pressure you. No worries or anxiety here. If you need anything at all, they came prepared to assist you: Rain gear, pants, windbreakers, snacks, water and Gatorade. At any time, you could have access to the stuff you might of brought in the van.
We made several stops to take pictures and view the landscape and learn of areas to be aware of as they might be coming up. Charlotte was a great leader, guiding us with hand motions and instructions for our safety. She and Jon communicated with walkie-talkies to navigate the traffic and the care of the riders. We all shared some great stories as we learned all about the route and history of Maui.
I can't recommend Maui Easy Riders enough. Their care and concern for your safety and adventurous spirit made our trip extremely enjoyable. The 6 of us riders enjoyed the journey so much, we all had lunch together, laughing and sharing more antics from the excursion. Don't pass up YOUR experience!! Thank you Charlotte and Jon for a WONDERFUL...
