Café Des Amis — Restaurant in Maui

Dang... this is such a bummer to write this review- I genuinely HATE writing negative reviews- especially during this current time. As someone who works in the service industry (here on island) - i know the struggle.

But for the love of heck the customer service my partner and I received was ROUGH. When we checked in to get a table we were told it would be about a 15-20 minute wait. Totally fine.

We waited 40 + minutes - which we were also copasetic about, taking into consideration the employees never know "exactly" how long the wait will be.

But THIS is what gets me...

A tourist family shows up, group of four. They get sat immediately. I go in to inquire if perhaps our names got missed on the list- they hadn't been. The waiter suggests that he simply sat that family first because they were in a larger group- so he gave them the larger table.

This would make sense----

IF the table we were sat at was indeed smaller.

Which is wasn't.

The server then proceeded to get the water, and take the order for the family who had just arrived.

Now... I dont want to make any hasty assumptions- but i am very confused as to why the server had zero communication with my partner and I on when we would be seated. He was incredibly pompous and ultimately unkind when we even asked about our table again.

As stated- I work in the service industry. This guy would have gotten a 25% tip and showered with some real friendly guests if he could have simply done the bare minimum and shown the minimum amount of respect.

Needless to say- we wont be coming back unfortunately. The food is always amazing- but at the end of the day- the way employees treat their guests is what...

Pretty disappointed here. 90 mins eating lunch at this place is too long. We were told the table wait was 15 mins but the host said we could ask the bar area of the same restaurant if we could sit there. Felt odd we had to ask and that the bar and restaurant sitting areas don’t communicate. Even the couple waiting before us went back and forth between the bar and restaurant sitting to get a table. We did get sitting immediately at the bar which was good. We did however had to go up to the bar to initiate our order. Our food took about an hour. My plate also came 10 to 15 mins before my wife and mom’s plates as well. We also had to go up to the bar to ask for more water. Felt the service didn’t check up on us or gave us a timely update on when our food will be done. An 1 hour wait and the food not delivered at the same time is poor kitchen performance. Also we saw bar staff folding napkins and counting the registered while we were still waiting on food. I understand if there was only one cook but maybe letting us know that information or training the bar staff to help out with the kitchen would be a good idea. I rarely leave negative reviews but I feel like service here would be an easy fix seeing there are plenty of bar staff and restaurant isn’t too big. Overall if you sit at the bar I feel you get ignored. A courteous check in at our table or updates on when our food will be ready is all I expected. Food was decent but maybe a little too much cumin. A man did apologize AFTER we starting to leaving about the long wait….This place could be a good bar rescue episode but not due to quality or cleanliness but due to service improvement. Help them...

Friends of mine have been here before so I knew I'd be in good hands.

ATMOSPHERE: The indoor portion is pretty tiny and open-air. The outdoor courtyard with gravel floor is pretty spacious and protected from the elements by the building walls, eaves, and umbrellas.

MENU: Savory and sweet crepes, and different curries.

FOOD: Ham & Aged Cheddar Cheese Crepe I really liked it. I never associated crepes as savory, only sweet. Now I'm a total fan! The crepe was just right in thickness and the ham & cheese had great flavor. It came with a leafy green salad with a balsamic dressing.

Hummus and Pita Bread On paper this sounds boring, but man, the hummus was absolutely delish! Some kind of tasty oil sat atop the hummus and made it even easier to spread. The pita bread was fresh and moist.

Chicken Avocado Crepe I loved it! The crepe was perfectly cooked and filled with fresh avocado, moist chicken and other subtle seasonings with sour cream to the side. The small side of green leaf salad (my favorite veggie) went well with the crepe. It's also an ideal portion size.

Banana and Chocolate Crepe We all shared this for dessert. I was a bit put-off that it came with a thin caramel sauce pooled at the bottom of the plate as it's not my favorite sweetener. I had just a few bites as it was too sugary for me.

SERVICE: Our female server was friendly and professional.
