This is a good place.
First, it might be helpful to clear some expectations. This place is an inn, not a hotel; you might think of it as a fancy bed & breakfast. It's not going to have an ice machine or a vending machine; the rooms don't have microwaves or refrigerators, etc. It's a very large, beautiful historic home run by a couple with a few staff here and there. Thus, for example, there may not be someone at the front desk when you call down or go down, because that person might be getting someone a drink at the bar, or running an errand, etc.
That said, if you're ready to accept the level of service of a B&B or an inn (with people who are going about their own lives while also hosting you in their home), it's a fine establishment.
The inn itself is beautiful, especially on the inside. The grounds are beautiful in some areas and not-quite-kept-up in others; see the pictures for examples of how some flowerbeds aren't terribly well-weeded.
Another forewarning: because this is an old mansion, it can have some quirks. For example, our room's blinds didn't go up and down very easily; the air conditioner had a hard time keeping up with the heat (to be fair, it was a 96-degree day in mid-summer, but our room still didn't get down below 78 during the day), and you had to hold the toilet handle down for several seconds to get it to flush. By no means anything terrible, but little quirks like that to be aware of.
The house itself is worth a day of relaxing in. It's a wonderful place to lounge and read. The breakfast is delicious, and the dining room is also delicious.
It's an expensive place, so it'll be a splurge for most people. It's a worthwhile one for a night or two, again, so long as you're not expecting a hotel-level of service. Expect to be housed in someone's very nice home, and expect that they will serve you, just perhaps not right at the instant you "ring the bell," so to speak, and you'll enjoy...
Read moreLovely one night experience. I wish our travels had allowed for an earlier check in and later check out as we would have enjoyed seeing more of the grounds and drinking coffee on the outside porch adjacent to our room (we checked in after 8 pm and left before 9 am).|The house is enormous. The photos don’t really reflect how massive the property/home is but you expect a woman dressed in revolutionary garb to greet you when you entire the enormous center hall! That’s the immediate impression!||We checked in late in the evening and were greeted by the very sweet owner, a slight Japanese woman with a warm smile. Upon check in you fill out your breakfast menu. Full breakfast is served on an enclosed porch from 8-9:30 am.||Our room (#6) upstairs was lovely! Very clean and sort of kitsch. The poster bed was super comfortable and the cotton blanket plus fluffy down comforter were perfect. The bathroom is small with a stall shower. The water pressure was incredible (think dermabrasion!) and plenty of hot water. The room was air conditioned and actually a little chilly. Plenty of closet space, tables for all of your items and sufficient outlets for electronics. There was a code for secure WiFi as well. Some reviewers commented on outside noise. We didn’t hear anything other than some cats arguing with one another in the morning. ||Breakfast was delicious, with excellent coffee and a very nice server. My husband was able to get a very nice gluten free waffle which was a real treat for him. My cheese quiche was a delicious fluffy and hot out of the oven quiche. ||I highly recommend this Inn. If you are looking for an out of the way special place to have a getaway this...
Read moreMy mother and I stayed at the Mercersburg Inn as mother/daughter get away. I have done many Bed and Breakfast Inns before and this one. This was my mother’s first experience at a B&B. This was NOT like my past B&B’s. Previously we got a tour of everything, were shown what we could do, and delightful tea and coffee was always available with snacks and goodies. The hosts were always polite and extremely helpful and insightful in my past bed and breakfast. You came in and were handed the key and a paper of instructions and off you went. The Mercersburg Inn is beautiful which is why my mother and I booked it however it needs an upgraded as far as electricity ‘don’t expect to plug anything in your room’, cooling, and gardening ‘beautiful beds that need weeded. There is to be a Bryson’s restaurant inside the place however it was closed due to the cook being on vacation so we had to eat elsewhere – very disappointing. The worst part of the whole trip was we were having a heat wave – the second hottest temps in Pennsylvania history and every part of this place was like a boiler room! No Air Conditioning! The AC unit we had in our room was a joke. My mother and I had to go to the local bakery or dollar store to stay cool or stay in the game room downstairs, the only room that had a window air conditioner. When in our room for the night we opened the doors to the outside because it was cooler. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone wanting a good bed and breakfast Inn to stay at. I will continue my vacation at other B&B Inn’s before...
