We didn't stay at the inn, but dined at the restaurant. Great ambience/decor, slightly dimmer lighting than I might have preferred, decent staff, but most of the food left us disappointed.
While there was the good and the bad, the meal started with the amuse-bouche of duck which was pleasant enough though one friend did find it to be a bit gamey. We moved on to our first course, fondue and escargot. We all agreed that the fondue cheese itself had an overpowering and unpleasant flavor that only the pickles could stand up to. Sidenote: that was probably a sufficient amount for four people rather than two, but regardless, none of us wanted to finish it due to the off-putting flavor. Escargot was pleasant enough according to my friend who ordered it.
Presentation didn't seem to be a priority with several dishes. Or perhaps that was a nod to the "wild boar" style. Our second course: The Caesar salad seemed to be a deconstructed salad considering it was a small head of lettuce simply sliced in half and the "croutons" were slices of bread...as was the cheese, sliced rather than shredded or even bit-size, like a half effort salad I might throw together at home. The onion soup had better presentation but lacked flavor, and the cheese turned into this frightful unrelenting gob that left us amused, but disgusted, and unable to finish.
The carbonara was more average. It was the most highly recommended dish by the host, but it had overly thick spaghetti type noodles (almost Udon size and texture) and a flavor that had my friends discussing Olive Garden as the better choice.
The halibut also lacked in presentation, texture and a bit subpar in flavor. It was flat and boxy, and not as pleasant as what I had recently ate at Harvest Restaurant in Lehi. My expectations were higher for Blue Boar than Harvest.
Flavor-wise, the filet mignon and desserts were probably the best part of the meal, particularly the creme brulee. It had a unique marshmallowy tone to the flavor that we all loved. The sorbet was nice, light and refreshing with lovely presentation (the the flavor that came out was different than what we were told). The flourless chocolate cake had the dark chocolate flavor, slightly different texture than what I prefer in a flourless, but still a decent, fudgy dessert.
Oh, and everyone loved the lotion in the ladies room. My friend was hoping to find out what it was.
I definitely prefer to write positive reviews over negative, but honesty comes first as I benefit from the reviews of others as I select restaurants for myself. Sad to say, we will not be returning to...
Read moreI highly recommend The Blue Boar Inn. My husband and I stayed there for our 5th wedding anniversary, and it was incredible. We originally paid for one of the less expensive rooms, and we made dinner reservations for the restaurant. Unfortunately, they had something come up, so they had to cancel our dinner reservation. They apologized for the inconvenience and I didn't think anything more of it. When we arrived to check in the manager came out and said that, due to the inconvenience, they were upgrading our room. I was shocked! Talk about amazing customer service! Most businesses say sorry and that's that. They literally made up for it, and then some, with that action. Amazing! We stayed in the Shakespeare room, which was beautiful (I've never stayed in a "hotel" with vaulted ceilings). Breakfast was complimentary, and not like other complimentary breakfasts. You were able to go down to the restaurant, and order anything off the menu (which was served to you as if you were in an actual restaurant) free of charge. The food was delicious. Truthfully the only regret we have is we had made other plans so we weren't able to stay there all day long. They have an entire library that you can borrow books from to read. They also have an entire collection of movies that you can "check out" to watch. The room comes with a large screen TV and DVD player. They give you passes to the pool that's just down the road (by the Midway Crater), too. There is golfing nearby, and places you can go wander through. We literally could have spent all day there and never gotten bored. Really the only complaint I have is the bed was a tad hard for my liking, but I know it's hard to have a bed that everyone loves. It didn't help that I'm pregnant and forced to sleep on my side, where I prefer sleeping on my back. It may have been a tad more comfortable if I had been able to sleep on my back. Also, you can hear the shower turn on in the room next door. We didn't realize that, and then felt really bad because my husband showered at like midnight...oops. Also, there isn't an elevator. They will take your bags upstairs, but if you have trouble with stairs I could see that being a difficulty. They also have free WiFi. We loved it! Will...
Read moreThe Blue Boar is mostly 4 stars due to their beautiful location, all tucked away in the green mountains of Midway, out of view from any major city, and around only people who for the most part are on vacation and have no concerns. As a matter of fact, I feel the majority of people here aren't just on vacation for the weekend, but are retired completely and have no intention of returning to a normal work schedule. The Blue Boar isn't just a restaurant, but also a hotel with rooms themed after popular writers like William Shakespear, Geoffrey Chaucer or Emily Dickinson. But I only ate at the restaurant, so I can't speak on their hotel amenities. My wife and I stopped here after running the Dirty Dash, lol, so to be very honest, we probably weren't their prime demographic target when we showed up in shorts, having only showered mud off of ourselves moments before with a garden hose. But we were able to pay, and really, that's all that matters. All the food was fine. I feel as though this menu hasn't changed since this establishment opened. French Onion soup straight off of a menu from the 60s. It was pretty good. The broth wasn't overly sweet which I appreciate. We were there midday, so we had the lunch menu, which is fine, because lunch menu pricing seems far more fair than dinner menu pricing. I got the Chicken Scaloppini. I enjoyed it personally. My wife didn't like the spatzel it came with, but you know what, it wasn't her meal to begin with so I don't care if she liked it. She ordered the dill havarti sandwich which she enjoyed. Was it better than any of the restaurants we tend to frequent in Salt Lake? No, not at all. I wouldn't even really consider this high end. But you're in Midway, your mind is at ease, and you're at a cute little inn. So shut up, stop being pretentious, and just enjoy the food...
