We stayed three nights recently for a wedding reception, in a king-sized bed room in their north building. Check in went smoothly, and all the staff we interacted with on our stay were knowledgeable, kind, and very genuine. The lobby area has a few couches and a table, as well as a small coffee station for guests to use. They also sell a few trinkets like magnets, key chains, etc. My only major complaint about the lobby area is that everything smelled a little "old" and dusty.
Our room was okay. It had a strange set up that included a narrow hallway around the bathroom and a closet without a door. The bed was a true king, and we also had a small sitting chair, a desk, dresser, mini-fridge, and a television. The bathroom in our room was a bit small, so much so that the door just barely missed the toilet, but it served it's purpose. The bathroom seemed clean, and everything worked well.
The room itself was VERY humid, despite the air conditioner being turned on. The humidity alone would have been one thing, but our room also had a slight smell to it, like a mixture of dust and mildew. We visited our friends' rooms, and they all had their own unique smells as well. However, none of the smells were so overwhelming that it was anything to complain about at the time.
The bed itself was fine, nothing super comfortable but not too hard or stiff. The housekeepers seemed to come and go at the perfect times every day, so our room was always spruced up a little every day with a made bed and folded towels. I also appreciated the two Lindt chocolate truffles that were left for us on the first day of our stay.
While there, we visited the pool area several times. The steam room and sauna work well, and were a nice little amenity that we weren't used to having at other hotels. The pool was nice as well. The hot tub was okay, but our first night there, the chemicals they used in the hot tub were so strong that many of our eyes and noses started to sting a bit. We also noticed there was a LOT of sand in the bottom of the hot tub, which was a little off-putting. The hinge on the top of the door leading to the pool was also dark brown and completely rusted off, so that it was no longer attached properly.
For one weekday night, and two weekend nights (plus a $13 magnet), our total was just over $500. With the average hotel costing around $140 a night, this place does run more expensive than usual. I'm not sure the extra expense is worth it, to be honest, but there also aren't many other places to stay. I think they know this, and use it to justify their prices. Overall, our stay here was decent and the staff were the highlight of the visit. With a little updating and thorough cleaning (to remove musty smells), this could easily be a...
Read moreIn the strictest sense of the word lodging this facility fits the description as posted. 3 star is not an accurate summary. 1 to 1.5 star maybe. The front desk personel - when you can find one - appear to be solely teenagers.
The room furniture is beautiful and eclectic - until you get to the other half of the room that appears to have been scavenged from some other hotel's rummage sale.
Unfortunately the bed is well past its replacement date. A spring mattress that you can feel every coil and has two obvious depressions where people have slept, the pillows were closer to a bath towel for thickness/comfort, and the towels were slightly less abrasive than sandpaper. Dust piled up on the hair dryer.... its apparent that the rooms have not been touched, cleaned, or renovated in some time.
The ancient wall mounted hvac unit could not be regulated to adequately control room temperature. Many setting were attempted including having to open the door on a 30° night because we couldn't find an adjustment for the heat that worked well.
The included breakfast is a continental buffet.... but "we don't have the granola, the fruit, the sausage".... but it's free 🤷♂️
The building is quite beautiful with lots of areas for improvement that COULD make the hotel enduring and charming. There is great potential here, but it misses the mark in execution.
We would not recommend staying here and we will not be returning. Make the drive in for the day but save yourselves the headache and drive somewhere else...
Read moreOur family of five adults visited New Glarus for the Christkindli Market weekend, and stayed at the Chalet Landhaus, which was a favorite many years ago when they were younger. We were not disappointed as the memories flooded back when we drove up.||The room was clean, dusted and vacuumed. There was pump soap, tissue and plenty of towels and washcloths. (1 star)||Everything was in working order, and there was only a minor squeak at the inner bathroom door. (1 star)||Although the bedding was too soft, but the pillows were very comfortable, and there were no noisy neighbors in the rooms, hallways or outside. (The facilities handbook in the room lists quiet hours, and there is a policy against children roaming unattended through the halls.) We got a very good night's rest. (1 star)||The breakfast area was clean and well stocked, with a terrific variety and quantity of food. An "included" breakfast of this quality is not available at any of the chain hotels we usually use. (1 star)||The front desk staff was very friendly, both at checkin and at checkout. During checkin the night clerk was very accommodating, particularly because of the late hour we arrived. It reminded us of the local charm the hotel had years ago during earlier visits. (1 star)||We will be coming back soon. I recommend the Chalet Landhaus for families of any age looking for a quiet weekend getaway. Based on these factors, my overall...
