We stayed at the BWNU during a hockey tourney January 3rd and 4th, 2020 along with most of our team and what appeared to be several other hockey teams. First of all, this hotel is too expensive for what it is. It's just a hotel with nothing that really stands out. Breakfast was just an average hotel breakfast, parking stunk, and Saturday our room was not cleaned/straightened by housekeeping while we were out for the day. My major complaint however is about the Male Front Desk staff Saturday night who had some sort of power complex that he felt the need to flex. Saturday evening the front desk woman was friendly as she walked around and gave us updates as to when the pool would be closing. She did a good job with this. Once we were asked to leave the pool at 11:00 we did so and the kids went to various rooms and some of the adults sat at a "reserved" table for our team in the area. Our group was small and consisted of less than 10, however we were the first and only group to be approached at about 11:30 and told by the front desk man that he had received "several noise complaints". We asked the front desk man if it would be possible for us to just move to another area in the hotel and a dad in our group even made several suggestions as we indicated that it was not us being loud but rather a much larger group that was across the pool area from us. Each suggestion was met with an emphatic "no". At this point the front desk man told our group that we either needed to go back to our rooms or the next step would be to call the police, he then returned to the front desk (without talking to anybody else - wow). This same front desk man also chased a couple of our boys down the hallway. Out of instinct they ran away from him as he chased them. My question is, what was his plan if he "caught them"? . After our group disbanded 5 of the adults chose to sit directly outside of one of their rooms at one of the patio tables provided by the hotel and continue to talk quietly. At about 12:00, four policemen walked up and told them they needed to return to their rooms. Policemen. Upon checkout the following morning I asked for the name of this man so I could voice my complaint. I was told by the woman who was the morning front desk person that she "didn't know" which of the two guys worked the night before (that she would have relieved)....I am not impressed BWNU, not...
Read moreWe stayed on a Saturday night. Check in was smooth. The front desk ladies were great. The rooms are comfortable and mostly clean, although I did stumble across a used wash cloth that was missed by housekeeping. I can understand, because it was kind of hidden on the shower curtain rod. I didn't see it until I closed the curtain to take a shower.
There's a large pool area with a large pool. At 6 feet deep it's deep enough for an adult to actually tread water without bottoming out, a rarity in today's world of shallow pools. There's also a decent sized hot tub and a small area with some games. No issues with the rooms or the amenities, although the bar/restaurant is currently closed for a rebranding.
The issue, as usual, has to do with other guests. Normally, decent human beings understand the world doesn't revolve around them. There's an unwritten rule that you don't monopolize things. You spend some time in the hot tub and you leave to allow others to use it. You play a game and let someone else play.
I can't imagine how it would ever enter anyone's mind that it's ok to do, but one special group decided the hot tub was theirs. They pulled chairs up around it and set up camp. And as an added bonus they ignored the large signs posted everywhere saying no electronic devices of any kind were allowed in the pool area and brought in a large speaker so we could all enjoy their music.
As the music kept getting louder and louder, I went and talked to the front desk ladies. I said I didn't know if there was anything they could do about them monopolizing the hot tub, but I did want the music to go away. They were promptly out to talk to the entitled bozos and the music stopped. It wasn't too long after that, their little party finally started to break up, good thing, because it was clear they had had enough to drink.
After one more round of their clueless teen kids jumping and diving (also not allowed) into the pool creating a big ruckus despite the presence of small children, we were finally rid of these morons.
I would ask the staff to be more proactive in dealing with these kinds of things, walk through the pool area periodically and not allow people to take over an area like that and to enforce the rules about no glass or electronics.
Other than that we had a great stay and would...
Read moreWhere to start, when we arrive the not so interested attendant double charges our card and says "don't worry it will eventually fall off, I think". We get to the room, the air does not work and there are broken tiles in the bathroom. We head down to find some ice and no ice machines just 2 coolers that day free ice that are both empty. That seems hygienic. We call the front desk to ask when the hot tub is open until. Open until 11, awesome head down to the front desk for towels. Ask for said towels, guy who loves his job tells us oh yeah pool closes at 10. I was wrong sorry about that. Wow, alright. I ask for a couple more pillows. He says I'm off in 10 minutes ill get someone to bring you some they are on the other side of the hotel. Ok. Hand him the spa towels back since obviously we won't be using the hot tub for 10 minutes. Get to room, knock on the door from the same guy who just said he would have someone else do it. Ok, bed time done with all this. Mattress is lumpy and old and I'm off and on sweating all night due to ac working intermittently. Morning arrives, but my alarm doesn't wake me up....someone from housekeeping does. They want to clean my room. It's 8:45 in the morning. I head down for breakfast, stop in at the front desk and ask when checkout is. She informs me 11. So why do I have someone asking me to clean the room at 8:45? Well that's their policy. Don't post it anywhere or say anything to guests. Just start knocking on doors at 8am on a holiday weekend. It's fine, I didn't need my sleep anyway. Head over to breakfast, yup no thanks. Eggs take dehydrated. Sausage tastes like plastic. This is the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel that wants to charge on their website over $150 a night. Lots of other hotels in New ulm, use them of if they are full head to a different town. This hotel is about as unpleasant and the staff working here. Never again, do better...
