It feels really unfortunate to be writing this review and I really hope to remove it if I get a response back from Peter. My friend and I chose to stay at the Mount Morris House for it's location and it's obvious old charm. While it was located nicely near Central Park and the room was adorable, spacious and clean, we did have a major issue that we felt needed to be addressed.
Entering the home was easy and seamless (entering with a key code) but when we arrived we noticed that we didn't receive a key to our room, the door to our room was unlocked and our names were displayed on the door. We could see that there were several other rooms (approximately 5) in the same stairwell that had names, so other guests were staying in the home along with us. This was expected and totally fine, however, we were not expecting to arrive close to midnight to a dark, unlocked room. We were not informed prior that we were not able to lock our room from the outside. We did not feel comfortable being two female travelers with our names displayed on the door and no way to keep people from entering the room while we were away. We felt that this was a major safety issue for our luggage and for our personal safety if we were to return late at night (there are several closets and places that someone could very easily hide themselves).
After emailing Peter with our concerns, he was very responsive and immediately emailed, texted and called me to discuss the issue. He offered to let us vacate the room and receive a refund for the nights that we didn't stay, or he could provide us with the skeleton key for the room but warned that it was very old and if it were to be lost or broken, then it would be extremely expensive to have a specialized locksmith come and replace it. We didn't want that kind of liability and felt that we should have been notified that the room does not lock externally to other guests staying at the home. He said that he understood and we agreed that we would pay for an extra night/day since we were vacating late (two nights/days total) and the cleaning fee. Unfortunately, we were charged the full amount for the stay and Peter has been unresponsive to my messages.
I hate writing bad reviews and I feel that I have given enough time for things to be set right with a refund. I understand that Peter says that there has never been a problem in almost 20 years, but the simple fact is that we are two female travelers in New York and it was very disconcerting and unsafe when the other residents are unknown. I have traveled all over the world and I have never seen a room not able to lock like this when there are other strangers in the vicinity. It should be disclosed for future travelers and I would be happy to change my review if Peter follows up with a refund.
Peter- in response to your reply. To say that this is extortion is extremely unkind and untrue. You clearly said in our conversation that you would refund me. I am holding you to your word, not extorting you. My only grievance with your hotel is that you lied in our conversation and said that you would not charge us for the additional nights or refund us. If that happened then there would not be a need for a review or a grievance in the...

Read moreI recently had the pleasure of staying at Mount Morris House during a visit with my family to New York City, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience.
From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warmth and hospitality by Peter. The check-in process was seamless, and we were quickly ushered into the room. The rooms were spacious, elegantly decorated, and immaculately clean, offering a perfect blend of modern comfort and historic charm.
One of the highlights of my stay was the breathtaking view from my window overlooking Mount Morris Park. Waking up to the sight of lush greenery and historic brownstones was truly a treat, and it provided a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The attention to detail at Mount Morris House is truly commendable. From the slow jazzy music once you step into the building to the luxurious bath amenities, every aspect of our stay was thoughtfully prepared to ensure maximum comfort and relaxation.
The location of Mount Morris House was also great. Situated in the heart of Harlem, it offers easy access to some of the city's top attractions, including Central Park, the Apollo Theater, an array of vibrant restaurants and shops as well as bus and subway stops direct to the city center.
Overall, my experience at Mount Morris House was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of gracious hospitality, stunning accommodation, and prime location makes it the perfect choice for anyone looking to experience the best of New York City in style. I can't wait to return for another unforgettable...
