I was very impressed with the downtown area. St. John’s is the Main Street and is filled with all types of shops. There are about 4-5 restaurants along this particular street. I wanted to try Velchoff’s which is near the river across from the Hampton hotel but they were closed (not open on Monday and Tuesday). I did have the opportunity to eat at Angel’s Diner which is located on Hwy 17 and you can easily access from St. John street. It’s actually behind the shops.
I ate at Angel’s diner which is the oldest diner in Florida (1932). I also bought ornament of restaurant created by one of the owners (Wendy) at Gem City Cottage. They have a large selection of items created by locals. Definitely worth the visit.
There is plenty of free parking along the street and if you want to walk the length of street and see ALL of the stores it’s best to park on west end and walk east towards River.
The buildings have beautiful murals that are representative of the cities history, military and black history etc. I absolutely loved this and it actually enhances the downtown area.
I had driven over the bridge but I didn’t realize that downtown was next to the river. This view is simply beautiful and I love that they have St. John’s River Center across from the river. This is an educational facility for children that teaches about wetlands.
If you need assistance please visit the Visitors Center located in the Chamber of Commerce.
They also have bingo downtown. 😃 I guess they love bingo!
There is so much to see and go in this quaint little city. I highly recommend touring the downtown...
