First, I’ll start with the location - right off of the interstate and tucked back. While you can hear some vehicles on the interstate, it isn’t bad at all.
Second is service - the front desk staff is polite, but don’t expect much from the staff at Burger Theory. We paid for the breakfast for the 2 mornings we would wake up here, but when we asked if we could just get food from the breakfast buffet to take back to the room, it was a straight “no.” There were a softball team or two staying here and we didn’t want to feel crowded or listen to all of them talking loud while we ate. So, the breakfast vouchers were a waste of money.
Third and final is the rooms - we got a room with two full beds which cost us nearly $500 for two nights while down here for the CNU graduation. The room is okay and is equipped with a TV, rollaway desk, a small fridge and an extra chair. However, the one issue I found was that the bathroom sink would drain very, very slow. How would the cleaning staff miss something like this because there is no way they wouldn’t notice it because it was the slowest drain I have ever come across in my near 45 years of life. Instead of wasting my time telling the front desk, I went ahead and popped the p-trap and drain plunger out to see what the hold up was….. figured it was faster since I had requested a couple extra towels on my way back to the room, from being out all day, and was told the evening staff would bring the to us later on……. Not a huge deal, but there should have been more than 3 towels in the bathroom to begin with since we booked for 2 adults and our 16 year old twins. Anyway, back to the drain…… you can see in the pictures (I don’t see an option to add photos so I’ll try to upload if I can on edit) (NOT ALLOWING PHOTOS ON REVIEW???)what I wrangled out of the drain. That’s not even all of it because some fell into the trash can I set underneath so I could keep from having a mess…… I’ve done this a time or two. Another issue was while there is a coffee maker in the room, you would expect more than one disposable cup for coffee…… naaaaa, you get one. Bottom line, is you would expect more if they jack the prices up due to local events/graduation. I which I could recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a place to stay in Newport News, but I can’t. Obvious issues should be addressed. A clogged drain, to me, is very obvious unless they are just wiping them out and going on to the next room. Makes you wonder if the linens get changed 🤔 If I had known these details prior to booking, I would have found somewhere else or I would have driven back and forth for the three days I needed to be here….. would have saved at least $400...
Read moreLet me start by saying this review necessary because I went back on my pledge in July of 2024 to never stay here again. Review is on the hotel website by The western PA bald guy|| Called to let the hotel know we would be late checking in. We checked in about 10:00 PM. Woman at front desk thanked me for calling earlier.|Get up to the room and there is a small Toilet paper on the holder and no spare. I go down to the front desk to get another roll. | The next morning (July 4th) we hear housekeeping knocking on the next room at about 9:30 AM. My wife opens our door a tells housekeeping we will be leaving shortly as she took the "Come back after me time" sign off the door. We left the room within 30 minutes from then| We get back around 11:00 or 11:30 PM and find that our room had not been made up. I go to the front desk and let Cole know how unhappy I was. I didn't yell but he knew I was unhappy. He sincerely apologized. I apologized to him for how upset I was and replied "That's Ok, you needed to vent and I understand. (Cole deserves to be working somewhere else. Too good for this place.) He said he would ask the manager to call me on my cell the next day.| The next morning about 9:00 AM there is a knock on our door which had the "COME BACK AFTER ME TIME" sign on the door. It was housekeeping wanting to empty the trash. Told him to came back a little later. When we got back to our room that night the room was made up, finally.| On Sunday morning we left at 9:30 AM after we took the "Come back after me time" sign off the door. We return that night around 9:00 PM to a room that was the same as we left it. I go to the front desk to complain. | The lady at the front desk was nice, pleasant and understanding. I didn't get her name but I heard that she was the front desk manager. She looked on a sheet of paper and it said there was a do not disturb sign on the door at 9:00 AM. I told her that was right, because we didn't take sign in until 9:30 that morning as we left. She called the head of housekeeping who told her that she did a walk-thru after noon and the sign was still on the door. Don't know what to say if someone is going to lie like that. Asked the woman at the front desk to have the manager call me the next day. The next morning, Monday, July 7th I ask the same woman to ask the manager to call me.| As of today, Thursday, July 10th, still no phone call.|| So do yourself a favor and don't stay here. Around the corner there is an I 64 overpass that you might want to consider...
Read moreGood and bad news for this property. Property location is fantastic: close to attractions, clean, well-lit, plenty of parking, and set back from the road (no noise during sleep hours). Modern exterior and interior: open floorplan; clean and well-lit lobby, hallways, stairs, and elevators. Check-in was smooth, staff was great. Guest room was spacious, bed and pillows comfortable, TV working, secure wifi, plenty of charging outlets, great view. Bathroom: NOT good. Clean sink and shower, but splatters on floor and wall around toilet; and, small, starchy bath towels (come on, IHG...get with the times and splurge on plush, oversized towels!). No complimentary coffee available in lobby lounge on Saturday morning (8:30 am), and trash had not been emptied from previous day. Front desk staffers seemed annoyed to be asked to make it, despite several guests queued for coffee. Staffer who eventually made coffee did so after handling trash and not washing hands. No creamer/sweetener available, so she had to "steal some" from the restaurant (downstairs). Restaurant was understaffed both days, despite it being a busy weekend in town (it was "move-in weekend" at the local university for the fall semester). Management scheduling weekend coverage should have known AND done better. The buffet was depleted of food and beverages faster than it could be replenished by staff, including coffee. No water available, except from the bar, which was not staffed. Cut fruit selections were not fresh, and only yogurt offered was Greek. Ordering off the menu was out of the question, due to short-staffing...it was impossible to get hold of a server, as they were visibly overwhelmed with the constant replenishment of the buffet and cleaning tables after guest departure. No manager visible on duty, unless that person was not easy to identify...it was utter chaos. Fresh food brought to the buffet, if one could get it, was good quality/good temperature/looked and tasted fresh...again, IF one could get it. The two staffers observed were working as fast as they could, and maintained very positive attitudes and professionalism despite the situation, and should be commended for that. Also, no "hydroboost" (water fountains) observed on the premises, which would be a nice amenity for guests looking to fill reusable water bottles (and enhance IHG's "green" aspirations). Would I return? Perhaps, but there is room for improvement at this establishment that needs to start...
