We stay here because this hotel received great reviews. My husband and I travel across the country week after week for our jobs. We stay at hotels just about every weekend. Unfortunately, there were some things that I did not like about the hotel. For example, the lighting in our room was terrible; there was only light on one side of the room. Since we were on the third level, which is also the ground level, there was no sheer curtain to allow natural lighting into the room without the whole world seeing inside of our room. They did serve breakfast, but it was incredibly bland. There was no seasoning on anything; the sausages for breakfast were even bland. We utilized the workout room, which is above the pool. That room was so incredibly hot you started pouring sweat the moment you stepped into it. They do have a laundry facility. Since we travel a lot, we have a week's worth of clothes almost every time we stay at a hotel and need to wash. Unfortunately, it cost us $5 to wash two loads, and those same two loads cost $10 to dry, which we thought was ridiculous. Overall, this hotel could certainly make some improvements, starting with the breakfast. Maybe have a professional designer come in and decorate the rooms with proper lighting and curtains. And make the workout room cold because when people work out, they get hot. We don't need to be hot and sweaty before we even start working out. The service was the best thing about this place. Everybody was kind and polite. The rooms were clean, and the staff was excellent!

I'd read the reviews here so I had an idea of what to expect, but was still disappointed. What was it that let me down the most? Hard to decide... - There was the general run down look of the place. Tons of chipped paint, cracks in the walls, stains galore. I know it's an old building but that doesn't mean you can't maintain it. - I didn't know I was going to be sharing the room. While I was still unloading my luggage I was treated to the lovely sound of a rodent (probably a squirrel) skittering around in the ceiling. That continued my whole stay. I think the winner though was the carpet mold. Even the filthy windows didn't really bother me. This place should be charging half of what it does. And I love the fact that they have a $500 cleaning fee for smoking in the room. I don't smoke so whatever, but I doubt the entire building is worth $500. With all that said, the 3 staff members I encountered were all very friendly, which is always a positive thing worth mentioning. It's just a shame they're being wasted on a hotel that probably just needs to be torn down. Maybe if it gets a (massive) renovations I'll stay here again, otherwise... nope.

Pleasantly surprised! I wasn't sure what to expect since the pricing was so good but I'm quite pleased with my experience. We needed a hotel to stop at while driving to the dells and was glad we picked this one. The pricing was super affordable (Less than $90 for the night) for 2 beds and breakfast Included. There was luggage all over the room so I didn't Include a full room view 😅 but it had a small table with 2 chairs, mini fridge, coffee maker etc. There's also a pool and gym The breakfast Included bagels, yogurt, cereal etc and eggs, bacon and sausage, and potatoes in buffet style. The room where breakfast is held has a nice view of the water and trees The staff were all super friendly and knowledgeable about the property, which apparently has a bunch of pieces from estate sales incorporated into the decor Apparently there's also a laundry room here The hotel is set back pretty far from the road and near a large parking lot for a shopping strip. Long story short, I'm very pleased with my stay and would recommend it to others.

Me my wife my three year old and one year old were attending a 3 day convention in Rockford. Seeing as how we have two small children rather than drive from Milwaukee to Rockford everyday we booked our stay at cliffbreakers after reviewing their website.

I'll start off by saying that the staff were very friendly and helpful which helped salvage the situation. Looking at the photos online is extremely misleading, at the time of this writing the restaurant, deck, river deck/ walk were unacessable. They say this is due to renovations, which would have been nice to know during booking. This however was the least of our problems.

The hotel itself is in compete disrepair. Pulling up you will notice right away that every window is seriously stained, fogged, and filthy. The shingles on the roof don't match, and paint is peeling on the fasade. Going inside the hotel you'll notice the lobby is in great shape but it quickly ends there.

After getting into the jumpy elevator we exited to see a carpet that had more stains than threads left. We walked from one side of the hotel to the other getting to our room and there's not a section of carpet without stains. On the walls the wallpaper is also peeling and held down with thumb tracks, and the ceiling tiles were either water stained or missing exposing leaking pipes. Not to mention several of the hotel room doors appeared to have been pryed open at some point and skuffed horribly.

The room itself smelled clean and the hotel itself smells clean but once again that's it. Our room had peeling wallpaper, the a/c vent was full of dead bugs, dirt and grime. The hairdryer intake was completely clogged with dust and who knows what else. The carpet around the a/c was damp and there were pillbugs under it. As well as our window was stained to the point of having no opacity.

We investigated the pool area next and every photo you see must be from when it was built. When we got there it was 745 at night but it was very dark, the lights were dull and several were flickering on and off. Above the pool were four ceiling fans inoperable due to their fan blades drooping like palm leaves, press board plus humidity doesn't mix, the workout room can not be seen as they were completely stained and fogged inside the panes. Right outside of the pool area is an enclosed patio where the fencing is broken in several spots and the scarce furniture mismatched.

After observing all of this me and my wife decided not to stay the entire trip as planned and the front desk was every nice when we cancelled the rest of our stay and refunded our money for the next two days.

Being 830 we decided to stay at least that night after a long convention day, however it was near impossible to sleep with artists such as bon jovi and jimi hendrix, artists who aren't bad, but their music is piped into the hallways at a volume that is audible in the hotel room. At 2am you will find yourself humming along to living on a prayer....

The continental breakfast that's advertised is very very scarce as well. There were a couple of bagels, dry cereal, yogurt cups and a plate of mini muffins... but that's it. ... no platters of food like they advertise

All this said i understand, now after reading a news article, that they're renovating and the previous owner went bankrupt, letting the place fall apart, however they do not advertise as this, nor do their room prices reflect this. What seemed too good to be true a quaint place to stay while in Rockford is exactly that.....not true

I hope their renovation goes well but my family will not be staying there if our yearly convention ends up in...

It's absolutely laughable that this hotel describes itself as "The Jewel of Rockford." The only "jewel" this place could be is Fool's Gold. It looks nice, but it isn't what it seems.|To begin with, it sits along the outskirts of a strip mall that contains a pawn shop. Across the opposite corner from that sits a liquor store with 8' metal barricades across the windows. Those speak volumes about what the area is like. |Now, more about the hotel itself.| There is a significant gap under the door in room 202, which let in so much light from the hallway that it was difficult to get to sleep.| The flip-over lock on the door looks like it isn't properly secured to the door, based on the wood putty underneath it. That makes me think that someone in the past has broken down the door and ripped it right off. I used a special door jammer of my own to insure our safety.| There were several long black hairs in the sheets from the housekeepers. Perhaps they should wear hair nets?| There are stains in the carpeting between the beds.| There was no useful TV channel listing available. The guide on the TV could only be scrolled one channel at a time, making it very difficult to find a specific station, like the football game that was playing in the lobby as we walked through.| The walls of the elevator car have huge chunks missing out of the panels.| There were chunks of dirt from someone's shoes on the floor just outside the elevator on 3rd floor the night we arrived. They were still there this morning. Why didn't the third shift person do basic sweeping/cleaning?|In the morning about 6:00, we heard a constant parade of heavy footsteps overhead, followed by what sounded like a cart rolling across a tile floor. It's a good thing we were already awake!| The thermostat is WAYYYY off. It was set to 70 degrees when we left for our evening event, and when we returned at 9 pm it was roasting in there! I estimate it was close to 78 degrees.| The shower doors were not clean.| There isn't enough water pressure in the shower head to provide a good spray. My wife had to rinse her shoulder-length hair THREE TIMES to get all the shampoo out because the water was so sparse.| The only "bath towels" to speak of were approximately 18" x 36", certainly not a normal size.| All of the furniture in the room looks like it is from the 1980, complete with 35+ years worth of dings.| The man at the front desk in the morning (6:43 am) was VERY rude! I walked up to the desk, gently set the key holder on the counter so he could see the room number, and said, "Good morning." He said only one thing to us, "Would you like a receipt?" That's it. Nothing such as "Good morning, how was your stay?" He printed out and handed me the receipt without saying anything at all. He didn't even say, "Thank you for staying with us, have a good day." Nothing. I was so irritated by this, I sarcastically said, "You're welcome." Still nothing. Apparently he doesn't understand basic customer service.|We will be returning to Rockford for another event at the beautiful Coronado Theater, but we definitely WILL NOT go anywhere near...
