Neal's Lodges — Hotel in Sabinal

My friends, family, and I have been staying at Neal's every summer for the past eleven years. The cleanliness of cabins has been declining the past three years, but we really wanted to keep our tradition going. This year, July 2019, the cabin was inexcusably FILTHY. Dust, dead bugs, live bugs, broken fixtures, electrical hazards, website pics showed extra tables for our big group that were not in the cabin, etc... Immediately upon arrival, we reported it all to management. That evening, they sent out a cleaning crew who said they didn't see anything wrong. So, we took pictures and showed them to management the next morning - who agreed that it was indeed filthy and needed to be cleaned. We arrived back to the cabin that evening to discover that it had only been spot cleaned - only the exact places we showed pictures of were cleaned, the rest of the cabin was still filthy. Three people in our party got sick - although impossible to know if it's connected, it's very concerning because other reviews of Neal's mentions groups getting sick who stayed in dirty cabins.

We saw 12 scorpions inside of the cabin in the three days we were there. Two were alive inside of a light fixture above one of the beds and we were unable to use that area. One of the kids on the trip was stung. There were also many other bugs inside of the cabin - alive and dead - each day...roaches, crickets, spiders, and flying sting bugs.

We floated the river with a party of 12 and a float for the cooler - which cost a total of $215. When we got to the end, we learned that we had to walk the floats back ourselves - up two hills, in the road with vehicle traffic, in the 100 degree heat, in our wet clothes and sandals. We also floated with children, so many of us had to carry multiple floats. In the past, they have offered shuttle service at the end of the float, but they no longer do that and did not tell us that before we left for the float.

We contacted the owner, Yvonne Davenport, after the trip. She dismissed our concerns in a very sarcastic manner - she did NOT apologize for the lack of cleanliness of the cabin even though she admitted that she spoke with the manager who saw the pictures and knows that it was for sure filthy. She gave us links of other places to stay on the Frio and obviously did not care about retaining our business. She indicated that we were lying about how often we have stayed there - saying she didn't think we stayed any time before 2016 - which was very easy for us to prove!

We have posted all of the emails - ours and Yvonne's - with our review on Neal's Facebook page posted July 2019. It's worth a read if you are considering spending any money and time to stay at this establishment. It was so disappointing to have a summer vacation with 17 people ruined and then not to have our concerns acknowledged by the owners of the establishment. It's a shame to break family tradition...judging from the lack of response from management and total disrespect from the owner, I imagine many others will be following suit and choosing to stay elsewhere. You can also see other sarcastic responses from Neal's on the comments from other patrons concerned with cleanliness on their Facebook page. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to stay here after seeing how they treat their "guests". We certainly will never stay at...

I would NEVER recommend. I spent over $500 to be told I should have rented a tent site if I wanted peace and quiet at all (which isn't possible because youc an hear this even there. We stayed on an OFF SEASON & the first night was great but the second morning they hosted a graduation and they had 10 ft speakers. I asked if they could ask to turn them down just a bit because I could hear them still after going in my cabin and tuning the TV up to full power. Thea Davenport was kind at first but upon complaining she was VERY rude and combative siting they paid to be here (they rented 5 cabins) (there were more than 100 ppl there not possible in 5 cabins) I paid over $500 to be here and because (1, I was told u had to rent a cabin) of her reaction and rudeness I will be taking picture because I dont trust them not to try to charge me for nothing. I LOVE music of all kinds but feel for $500 I shouldn't be forced to hear whatever they allow a party to play. They are racist, when I complained they said it's country music so I shouldn't care. We will be staying out our 2 days (1 night left) but will NEVER stay here again unless it's a tent site (only $60 per night peak season). So not worth the extra hundreds for a cabin when there is no expectation of peace. THEA WAS EXTREMELY RUDE after complaint was made, offering my wife a birthday shirt but upon the complaint changed to be an extremely rude and unkind person. Wish I would have stayed elsewhere. No one said as long as you blare country music its ok. RACIST!! Ppl get kicked out for less here for less (see other reviews) especially if it's any other genre of music.. perfect before SATURDAY.. NEVER STAY HERE U LESS ITS DURNING THE WEEK or a tent site.. NOT WORTH THE HUNDREDS YOU WILL SPEND.. THEY ARE LUCKY I CANT AFFORD A LARGER SPEAKER.. SO NOT HAPPY WITH THIS PLACE.. my spouses 30th birthday.. worst experience!! I hate being disrespected I spent hundreds more than it's worth. I was respectful while I asked to have them ASK to turn it down but as long as it was country music it was ok.. very racist place.. NEVER RECOMMENDING.. there's a bar here why cant they play that loud music there.. definitely not the place to come if you seek peace an18d tranquility.. so sad to give this place so few stars.. Anyone with maternal instincts will know exactly where the anger in this review comes from! Because of the response of the owner anyone reading this review will understand why there is no training and compromised safety of children. I will NEVER recommend this place to ANYONE! Especially if they have children! Myself and my 20 month old baby was put in danger and then I was LIED to about what would be the solution! They no longer allow you to park at the river which is fine. They have "college kids" driving golf carts to take people back and forth. If you have already been here you know there is a second VERY STEEP trail that some CARS go up and down. After swimming a young "college kid" was going to give myself, husband and twin babies a ride back to our car, she chose to take the VERY STEEP hill that the golf cart could NOT even make it up and being soaking wet from the river and the incline I slipped out the seat and at the same time the cart started rolling back onto my leg all while I'm trying to hang on, hold my baby and get my leg ran over by the cart that is rolling back. My husband could only yell STOP to the girl because he is holding my other baby. I went to the office to file a complaint that this girl not only put my 20 month old baby in danger but myself who is 8 months pregnant. I got a lady that said the girl would no longer drive the carts yet the very next day she was! When I informed the lady that it should be common sense not to try to go up that steep hill she informed me they were "college kids" and common sense isn't common anymore. The COMMON SENSE should fall onto the OWNERS and the MANAGERS and make sure these "college kids" that they hire is PROPERLY TRAINED! The ONLY reason my baby didn't substain injury is because I refused to drop her and had no choice but to allow the cart to back over my leg that is now covered in bruises! I was not offered any other help or even an incident report. I was only told the girl would not be driving and yet she was! No one attacked anyone, like an adult I went straight to the office to file the complaint nothing was said to the "college girl" who the "manager" said they had no common sense!
