Staying at this downtown San Francisco hotel offers a unique and charming experience, reminiscent of the tight, cosy accommodations one might find in Hong Kong or Tokyo. Despite its older decor and the presence of old carpet, the hotel is meticulously maintained, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for all guests. Although the view from our rooms left much to be desired, the overall experience was very positive. One minor inconvenience was the lack of connected rooms; however, having our two rooms adjacent to each other mitigated this issue somewhat. The hotel's location is particularly noteworthy, situated directly on the tracks of San Francisco's iconic tram system. This provided an excellent opportunity to explore the city in a truly authentic manner, adding a delightful dimension to our stay.Breakfast at the hotel was quite satisfying, with a good selection of quiches and bakery items that appeared fresh and tasty, even though there were no fresh omelettes available. The absence of on-site parking and the high cost of parking nearby were drawbacks, but understandable given the prime downtown location.Overall, our stay was a great experience, enriched by the charm and character of both the hotel and its vibrant San Francisco surroundings.
Navigating the parking situation at this hotel proved to be quite the adventure, largely due to its unconventional access routes and somewhat confusing guidance for first-time guests. Situated in an area where vehicular access is seemingly restricted due to tram tracks and clear "No Entry" signs for cars, the initial approach to the hotel can be perplexing. Thankfully, after a quick call to the hotel's helpful staff, we were informed that these signs could be disregarded for the purpose of reaching the designated unloading area adjacent to the tram tracks. This space, conveniently located right beside the tram, allows guests approximately half an hour to unload luggage and check in, which is a thoughtful accommodation under the circumstances.Subsequent parking requires a short drive to a parking building situated about two blocks away from the hotel. This slight inconvenience is somewhat offset by the proximity, although the absence of on-site parking or street parking options is notable. Guests booking through Hilton's website should be aware that the hotel's affiliation with Hilton may not be immediately apparent. The hotel is primarily advertised under the name "Barnes Hotel," with minimal Hilton branding visible only near the front desk area, which can lead to some confusion upon arrival. To mitigate potential confusion and ensure a smooth arrival and check-in process, I strongly recommend contacting the hotel directly for precise directions and assistance. Despite these initial navigational challenges, the hotel's unique approach to guest arrival and parking does not detract from the overall positive experience of staying in such a centrally located and...
Read moreI'm going to start by saying, if your lyft driver struggle to find the hotel that should be a massive red flag.
Upon arrival we were asking if we preferred a view or quiet area, we chose quiet. But when we arrived it was not at all quiet. The view I wasn't expecting to be great but also wasn't happy to see the view was a brick wall with netting filled with trash. We also were occpanied by a pigeon who coo-ed 24/7.
The room was poorly lit with almost all lights hanging from a cord, so if you gave small children, this isn't the place for you. The light above the table had a dimmer switch but the reality of that was have it strobe setting or just on. The phone wires sat exposed next to the bed. When you used the coffee maker it causes the lights to flicker.
The bathroom light was on the outside of the bathroom with no fan ventilating the room, so the room would get musky. When showering you could max at the heat and be lucky to get Luke warm water. The sprayer on the shower head sucks so bad it splashes water outside the tub so be ready to sop up that mess with all of your towels and it still not be enough. The shower also doesn't properly drain so you get to stand in 4+ inches of water the entire time. They also only gave us one roll of toilet paper with the one that's opened have about a 1/4 of the roll left.
Morning 1 we went to Starbucks for food and drink. Both the security guard and desk clerk were fast asleep and only awoke because there was noise. Note to the hotel owners if your staff isn't doing their job all those snacks you charge an arm and a leg for will end up stolen. Walking out the front door there was a pile of human feces the size of a softball. Literally next to the front door. This is the worst area of San Francisco you could stay. Look at a crime map this is the central location of gangs and drugs.
Be aware also right outside the front door there are really aggressive homeless people. They shove their hand in your face for money, lunge and scream at you. I lived in Eugene OR which has the highest homeless population per capita and they are all aggressive. So it's not that I'm not used to that, this was just that bad.
Also don't be fooled by the website there is zero parking. I waited in line to buy a drink and overheard a woman checking in as well as asking for parking so her husband who was waiting in the car would know where to go. He said nope no parking. She asked about it saying so on the website and he gaslit her and said there is none. He was also incredibly rude to me as he chose to try to help anyone he could buy me when all I was trying to do was get a drink.
Day 3 on the trip we awoke to a cockroach just hanging out on our window which was just a lovely sight.
We have checked out and will be staying in a better hotel. Do not bother risking going here. Take one look at my pictures and...
Read moreThe Hilton Barns - Tapestry Collection in SF is very disappointing. I someone else describe it as a "Bait and Switch" and that could not be further from the truth. As a Hilton Family & Friends member we have stayed in a few of these types of hotels by Hilton and are always impressed as to how fun and nice they always are. This somehow being the exception to any Hilton Tapestry Collection hotel.
You will find that this hotel sits right on the corner of Market St. and the Tenderloin District in SF, otherwise better known as their Skid Row. The streets are dirty, the area is unsafe at night, and the hotel is in a serious state of neglect.
We arrived later that night to find most of the parking areas are shuttered to keep the homeless out so parking in the streets was really our only option as the hotel does not offer Valet services later at night. This forced us to park our car along sketchy streets with sketchy people watching us unpack all our belongings.
We were greeted by friendly staff (That's why that's the highest point of this review) who were more than happy to recommend a few areas (Nothing near where we were staying) and offer a few things like water to us on our way up. Once we entered our room we found that many things in the room were left unplugged. I tried to open the blinds in the room to find they were all broken. Once getting all the lights and AC unit plugged in we found out that our boiler room of a hotel did not have a working AC unit. I then picked up the phone to call the front desk and found out that our room's phone did not work at all. At that point I had decided that I would move my fiancé and myself to the Hilton up-town to the Hilton San Francisco Financial District. It's only a few dollars more AND WORTH EVERY PENNY! They also have their own parking as well.
Overall I am heavily disappointed with the poor quality of the rooms and the bad area it's located in. Don't let the cute pictures lure you in...
