We stayed here for 5 nights for our 30th anniversary trip to San Francisco. We are from Texas so let me say that we were surprised how much hotels cost. We think this hotel is VERY basic but pricey to us. My biggest complaint is there is a constant leak in the tub in room 204. It is a constant drip that is annoying to listen to but more unacceptable to be wasting water!! I reported it twice and nothing was done. Some of the pictures on the website are misleading. Our room was not as nice as any of the rooms pictured. It was clean and comfortable enough. We had our own bathroom. However, there are no amenities. There are huge bottles of cheap shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. There was a bathroom mat for the floor. I am glad I brought my own toiletries. There was no hair dryer. I had to call the other hotel and asked one to be delivered. Thank goodness they had one!!! But what was very inconvenient is there is NOWHERE to place any bathroom belongings. There is no shelving or counter space. I put our toothbrushes in a paper cup. I had to set up the chair in the room by the bathroom door to place my make-up, brush, hair products, etc. So, if you are male and have little hygiene needs then this is ok for you. It would make all the difference to install a shelf over the toilet or next to the sink. The pictures show shelving, but our room had none. There was a window with an UGLY view of a brick wall and some equipment. Hardly any natural light (once again-nothing like the pics). You get a kettle with one packet of tea. No coffee. In the pictures, they show a lobby that looks functioning with coffee and maybe in use. No one works at this hotel. You let yourself in with a key card. There will be no one at the front desk. You will go to another hotel to check in and get your own towels. No one will clean your room unless you pay. All of those things were made clear before booking so we were fine with that. But it would be nice if they set up a coffee station in the lobby. Otherwise, the lobby is just wasted space. Let me say something good. The employees at the other hotel were friendly and accommodating with any needs. The hotel was clean, convenient and quiet for us. We were hardly in our room, so the location was more important than the "extras". We did NOT hear any late-night partying or noise. The walls are very thin so you can hear a lot. The floors are creaky, so we felt like we needed to be quiet. The biggest plus is the LOCATION! We were so close to the Powell Bart station (which you can take to and from the airport). There is a cable car station there as well. That will take you all the way up the hill to Fisherman's Wharf. Every mode of transportation will stop at Powell. We could take the MUNIS (the bus) or the historic streetcar as well. They have every route that will get you all over the city. We never had any problems finding where we needed to go. We also walked to a few local restaurants in the Union Square area as well. I was very happy how easily we got around. I felt like we were in the center. We felt safe and were overall good with our pick. Just a few things could have made us more...

Excellent Rooms - the photos are exactly what you get. The hotel has just recently reopened since Covid (Sept 2021) and has limited housekeeping due to covid (charged at $35-50) . For free, the Herbert Hotel will arrange fresh sheets and towels but you have to make the bed yourself if you want a re-fresh mid stay.

A lot of the hotel is rented out long term to permanent residents. It's worth mentioning just in case you are next to the guy with the really loud TV. When you choose a room you may have to sacrifice the view for the peace and quiet. I found this to be a blessing, as I had a great view for the first 4 days with a little noise, and then went to a very quiet room with a more obscured view of Powell St.

The Herbert Hotel is run by the Bartlett Hotel across the street. The Herbert has no staff on site and pretty much runs on a key card system which is very private and quite nice and hassle free. The elevator to the 5th floor was very quick and I didn't really ever have to wait for long. The staff I did see - housekeeping and maintenance - were very professional as you would expect. I ran into a couple of other guests but generally felt I had the place to myself.

Room wise there is a lovely new bed and suspended furniture including a desk to work at and a safe. There were plenty of power sockets and the wifi was super fast. If you are looking for a hotel on a budget in a great location - this is the one for you. Remember you are paying for what you get - this is no frills, but what you get is done great! * And great water pressure too and a huge refrigerator for my daily leftovers and milk for my coffee.

TV wise - it is quite limited to US cable channels. I found plugging in my MAC and watching netflix on my MAC ended up being my best bet. I was able to eventually also set up my new Sonos One Alexa but that's...

DO NOT COME HERE AS A SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER. The accommodations were suitable for a 2 star hotel, but I was extremely unsafe. There are unhoused people on the street at all times, but this morning there was a man sleeping at the door so that I physically could not exit (picture attached). He appeared to be sleeping whilst holding a cheese grater. Someone else trying to exit the hotel knocked on the glass to wake him, and the sleeping man began to bang on the glass with the grater and a switchblade, and he aggressively tried to grain entry to the hotel. Me and the other guest had to hide for several minutes before exiting. I called the hotel after the incident to see if there was any way security or a staff member could be present in the lobby in the mornings and evenings, and the response was no, but I could call the police. This evening, I entered the hotel and was met by a man with a walker groaning in agony. I held the door open for him, and he began aggressively demanding I say a prayer for a miracle. I felt extremely unsafe but was pinned by the door and he was blocking the hotel entrance. He proceeded to tell me incoherently that he was dragged out of his room and was now going to the hospital, and his microwave was taken away because it was covered in bugs. I tried to contact the hotel after the incident but did not receive any response. For your safety, splurge on a hotel with security and a lobby.

As one of the cheapest options around Union Square, I was expecting much worse, but the lobby and rooms turned out to be fairly chic, even though very simple. I had a room without an en suite bathroom, although it had a sink/vanity. So you would use the shared toilet room and separate shower room in the hallway. It worked out really easy, they're single-user one-at-a-time rooms that you can lock with an "occupied/vacant" indicator on the door. The toilet and shower room were always free when I needed them... only 4 rooms per floor are shared-bath rooms, and you can always go to another floor to use its shared toilet/bath if your floor is occupied. The biggest drawback to this hotel is the super thin walls. You can hear your neighbors next to you clear as day. Our other neighbors realized this and it seemed like everyone was whispering as not to desturb the other, which was nice, but it could have gone the opposite way with lost sleep. I would comeback because of the price, but the thin walls are almost a deal breaker. The TVs are small and dated (at least in my room) and have a crappy analog standard def signal that's semi static-y because it's probably getting split from one source 60 times. WiFi was good however with a good signal throughout the hotel and fast enough to stream Netflix.
