So, it's a Thursday night here in the North Bay and on the 10 o'clock news they are screaming (screaming!) about an impending storm due to dump rain, wind and all kinds of yuck on the Friday morning commute. They have film of hardware stores with their shelves almost empty and warnings stating that as this is the first storm of the year, the morning commute will be nothing short of hazardous.
And of course, the family is due to be in the South Bay first thing in the morning for a battery of meetings lasting all day, 10am to 6pm. Oh yay. So I say, "Family, we need to go down tonight and avoid all the weather! If our commute takes of 2.5 hours and we follow this storm down south the whole commute, we will be exhausted, hungry and not in any mood to take on meetings all day!
Because of a prior stay at Aloft Cupertino (connected to the Apple campus), and I am an SPG Club member, the hubby suggested we stay there again - and so sort of by accident picked the Aloft on Moorpark - on the Cupertino San Jose border. This turned out to be more convenient as it was central to all our meetings. After a quick check of a popular travel website that had the nightly price set as $165.00/night, we called the property to book (hopefully at the lower price), unfortunately, the clerk quoted us a heart stopping rate of $330/night - so hubby drove a little more than an hour down south in non-commute, non-inclement weather while I booked the hotel on the travel site and the kid slept in the back seat.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with a very hip, modern, minimalist hotel (the first three quarters of the pictures on the Yelp review site look nothing like this property as of this writing). There is underground parking (but not secured underground parking) directly underneath the hotel. The latest financial quotes flash by on an LED crawler next to the elevator. Although we arrived at midnight, the receptionist was nice. She cheerfully explained that this property was formerly a Sheraton All Points property and had just been remodeled to an Aloft hotel. This hotel was popular with both the businessman set and people who were getting married or visiting wineries in the area. We were lucky! Since the $165/night rooms were all gone, we were bumped up to the "Club" floor with a bigger room - and a bigger room it was! A very large room on a "private floor" (you needed a special key to get up to the third floor) with higher ceilings (I could not verify this because we didn't see any of the rooms on the other floors, but the ceiling in our room was certainly high), huge (huge) flat screen TV, a work station with USB and AC ports, free coffee, bottled water and wifi! You could also sign into Apple TV to watch movies! The wifi, while not screaming fast, was easy to access and got the job done. Oh yay!
The next morning we woke up early and for $9.99 per person, had breakfast in the lobby. It was modest with home fries, scrambled eggs, sausage (yummy), a selection of carbs (breads & muffins & croissants), fruits and cereal (coffee, tea & juice). Two huge flat screens had sports or the morning news on and the service was very attentive for a 10 buck meal.
Amenities we didn't use were a swimming pool (with cabanas!) a pool table (not regulation) and the fitness room (smallish, but would get the job done if you used it).
In the end, I recommend this hotel! It is decidedly designed (in my opinion) for the younger set, but does not offend the senses if you are not in the demographic. The walls are not soundproof, but it isn't really a bother and it was after midnight anyway, so it was a good reminder not to be too loud ourselves! Have a good relaxing stay at this hotel - we did and were happy not to fight traffic on a Friday morning commute and were ready for a full day of meetings after a restful...
Read moreI requested adjoining rooms before I arrived at the hotel, so my sister and I could be close together. I was told that was not possible due to the kind of beds we had (both requested kings). No solution was offered. When we arrived, I was told there is no breakfast (even though that was one of the reasons we chose this hotel), no restaurant, and maid service was only available upon 24 hour advance notice, and an appointment needed to be made. Having 2 small children with me, I didn't know when we would be available to schedule appt, so I never made one, although we really did need maid service every day. We never got new towels, even though front office told us they had been delivered to our room. There were no pool towels available by the pool. When we asked for some, front office staff told us to use our room towels. They did offer us some free bottled water. The room was nicely decorated, very modern. But the coffee machine spewed out spoiled milk when I tried to make some coffee. So gross. And the sink water was literally white and cloudy. I was so disgusted, I used bottled water to wash out my mouth. When my sister arrived, she received a completely different message from front staff. She was not offered any bottled water. She was told maid service was just not available at all. When she was checking in, 4 young adults completely drunk swaggered through the hotel making a lot of noise, raising their voice almost to a yelling volume. But they eventually made it to the elevators and left without incident. When my nieces saw the elevators, they got excited and yelled "elevators!" in pure joy, but the front office staff immediately shushed them to be quiet. It was so rude! They were just excited to be there. Neither of us had good first impressions. But the biggest complaint I have is that the walls of the hotel are unbelievably thin. On Friday night, I was awoken at 2am by the couple next door fighting about the club they just left. Apparantly, he felt she was flirting and looking at other guys, and she said he was mistaken. I know this because I could hear every single word of their conversation. Through our adjoining doors. It was a traumatic fight. I was prepared to call the cops because it felt like it was going to escalate to violence. I was also worried my girls would wake up and be scared also. They eventually went silent. At 7am I was awoken to very loud sex. It was not just moaning and groaning,...
Read moreYour front desk manager Ryan, was extremely friendly and kind! Upon arrival I was disappointed to see that many guests were not wearing masks. When I had booked the room I had called to inquire if masks were required and was told yes they were, however, upon arrival that was not the case. I am immune - compromised and it’s important that others around me take similar precautions but unfortunately I didn’t feel very comfortable because that was not happening. So we did not stay the next day as planned, and left extremely early in the morning. The room itself, was dirty, did not look like it had been cleaned well, there was a previous guests’ sock in a corner, dirt on the floor in the bathroom, leftover hair from a previous guest throughout, dust along the top of the bedframe and TV, two cobwebs hanging from the ceiling….it just unfortunately did not look like you have been cleaned very well at all. I wiped down most of the room myself, including the floor, which after wiping was very dirty. The sheets on the bed seem to be clean, but I usually bring my own sheets anyway, it was just disappointing how dirty the room was especially with Covid, and viruses, and germs, that I would’ve thought that things would’ve been much more pristine. We have stayed at many Marriott hotels throughout the years, and though from first appearance everything looks new and modern, upon closer inspection that was not to be the case. So my recommendation would be to have some sort of quality control regarding the follow-through of masks as the front door sign indicated they were required to enter, and quality control after rooms have been cleaned. That might help prevent having a disappointing guest...
