It was complicated! First off....we spoke to Cathy when we reserved the room. She was very nice and helpful. We told her we were traveling by train, and she offered to pick us up at the train station which was a short drive from the B&B. We were in contact with Dylan the entire train trip and he was very responsive....checking on our arrival time and coordinating with us. But when we did arrive approximately 15 minutes late he was too busy fixing a printer to accommodate our pick up so we had to Uber there... And acted like our train coversation had never happened. Upon arrival, the place did not appear as it did in the website photos. Very run down and in dire need of repair. The carpet was worn and stained everywhere. There was a musty smell in the entire place. The wallpaper was peeling on every wall in our room. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. But there were multiple light bulbs that were burnt out in the lamps. The first breakfast....I can't begin to describe. Unpalatable! The coffee was colored water and the food consisted of a raw corn tortilla with uncooked cauliflower and carrots inside, cold Brie with tomatoes and an egg that was like plastic. The first thing I noticed besides the horrible coffee was the rotten strawberries that were camouflaged with shredded coconut! I was afraid to eat anything else after I had to spit them into a napkin. The second morning was better. The grounds were nothing like the pictures on the website and in some of the reviews. The common areas of the inn were ok. Our stay was Monday through Thursday, so maybe things are better on the weekends. It was just a let down from the pictures on the website and the innkeepers were scarce except for breakfast time. Very disappointing for the price. We would probably not stay here again. The bed was comfortable and the location was great, other than that, it was just ok.

10/10 experience. The location is SUPER accommodating and while it was a last minute reservation through AMEX, they helped us out and got us a room on race weekend of F1! With that, this place also has shops on the first floor so it really is a proper inn vibe. The rooms are very homely and dated, but in a positive way. If you’re a young adult, you’ll definitely love it. The streets are a bit loud as we had a window directly out the road, but they have this in mind with earplugs readily available and sound machines! This place is also not too handicap friendly as there are 2 floors and no elevator, but I imagine they warn ahead or at least have a room somewhere if you’re in need of services! Like I said, they’re very accommodating with their rooms and lodging as a whole! Parking is also a bit interesting as you will be parking in a tiny lot/alley or in the street behind the building which was NO issue at all. I LOVED THIS as it felt almost like a different part of the world. Also if you’re a big walker/skateboarder, I’d recommend this place as downtown/target/HEB are nearby and easy to get to! Also bring a tube and enjoy the river! We brought paddle boards and LOVED it!!!! Best place to stay in San Marcos hands down! Also for my photography lovers, check all of the local shops out as all of them are fun and very engaging!

The Crystal River Inn is by far the best place to stay in San Marcos! Located right in the heart of town, it offers ultimate convenience without the hassle of traffic. Unlike other hotels in the area, you won’t have to worry about battling congestion just to get into the city. Once you check in, you’re perfectly situated to walk anywhere you want to go – from fantastic restaurants to unique shops, everything is just a short stroll away.

The rooms themselves are absolutely wonderful. The beds are incredibly comfortable, and the temperature control is second to none – you can set the room exactly how you like it, making it feel just like home. It’s one of those places where you can truly relax and unwind. Additionally, there’s plenty of parking available, which is always a bonus. The hotel does a great job of ensuring that only guests use the lot, so you never have to worry about finding a spot, even during peak times.

Speaking of check-in, the process was seamless. I was in my room in under 5 minutes, which made the arrival experience all the more pleasant.

But what really sets Crystal River Inn apart is the staff. From the moment I arrived, they made me feel welcome and valued. Everyone I interacted with was not only friendly but also genuinely eager to ensure I had everything I needed. Their attentiveness and professionalism were exceptional, and they went out of their way to make my stay even more enjoyable. Whether I had a simple question or needed assistance with something, the staff was always there with a smile and quick solution.

And it gets even better—Crystal River Inn is expanding soon, and I’m excited to see what’s in store! It’s clear that they’re dedicated to providing an even better experience for their guests, and I can’t wait to see how they’ll grow and improve. The owner is a kind, courteous, and ambitious woman who is clearly passionate about creating a great experience for her guests. Her dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction truly shines through in every aspect of the inn.

Whether you're visiting for business, leisure, or to visit your children at Texas State University, I highly recommend Crystal River Inn for a stress-free, enjoyable stay in San Marcos. The hotel’s prime location makes it incredibly convenient to explore the area and get a glimpse of the vibrant student life at Texas State, offering a firsthand experience of the campus your children are enjoying. With its unbeatable comfort, outstanding service, and future expansion, this hotel truly offers everything you need for a memorable experience...

Interesting, my review is no longer up. They also are trying to get my review off of wedding wire... Well let me just give you a run down of my wedding here. Cathy Dillon was ALWAYS late to every appointment we had, she didn't even show up to the meeting my mother had to miss work for, which we found out after waiting an hour and a half. The staff kept telling us she was on her way... I specifically asked for certain things and day of the wedding got the wrong chairs. She gave us the cheaper ones another bride chose a week before and did not give us a rebate of any kind. For the actual wedding day, the suite we were forced to purchase with the wedding was freezing all night, and so close to the bar next door me and my bridesmaids didn't sleep until 4am. They refused to let us start setting up until 2 hours before the wedding when we were promised we could start setting up at 8am for my 5pm wedding so we'd have enough time to get dressed and made up since we were doing it ourselves.. The staff kept trying to get pictures of me and our set up and I refused, if you see beauty and the beast pictures on there portfolio they stole that, because we set up and did everything. We only paid for there place. Then dinner was okay at best, I have many allergies that they were not very accommodating, and they started cleaning up and putting the food away as soon as the line ended. Seconds for no one! When we paid for the meal but they took it for left overs for themselves. We paid to have a bartender who mysteriously vanished after an hour into the reception. Cathy wasn't even at the wedding, but later that week called to tell me we owed her more money because more people showed up than we planned. No. Less people showed up. So that is just my greivances I continue to have 2 years after my wedding. Thanks, if you try taking it down I'll just keep going. :).

By the way: I know for a fact Sonya McGill works at the Crystal River inn. She was Cathy's assistant that made us wait when Cathy didn't even show up. Her review should not be up much...
