First stay was in July 2019. We picked the hotel because it was the cheapest option at that exit. Our expectations were not super high because of the price. The rooms were about what we expected, clean but really musty with carpet that needed to be replaced and walls that needed to be repainted. It was kinda gross, but it is also a budget hotel. They were doing renovations and the elevator was down. We were on the 3rd floor. We survived, but it was a hassle when we had to carry our luggage up and down the stairs. Because of the renovations, I don't think they had breakfast options. Not great, but, again, cheap hotel you get what you get, right? The thing that stank was they turned off the water every day for a set number of hours. THAT WAS AWFUL. If you were in your room during that window, you couldn't shower or flush the toilet. If you came back after the water had been turned back on, the water came out funky colored and spit at you. It just wasn't a great hotel stay and we decided next time we needed to visits Ashtabula, we'd stay somewhere else. Jump ahead to March 2023. We had to travel for a funeral. I get online to find a hotel, this is the ONLY hotel at that exit that had rooms for the weekend we were in town. So, we have to take what we can get. I recall us saying that since they had recently done renovations, the hotel was going to be nicer than when we were there 4 years ago. It was marginally nicer. Same musty smell, same worn carpet. The walls didn't seem as beat up and they had a pretty decent breakfast spread for this class of hotel. The water pressure was awful and never got above a tepid temperature even when I ran the shower for more than 10 minutes. My husband had the same issue, so this wasn't related to me not knowing how to use a hotel shower. The bathroom's pocket door was out of alignment and would not close, leaving a good 2-inch gap between the bathroom and the room. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it is pretty huge when you are sharing the room with your spouse and don't want them up close and personal when you are sitting on the toilet. Her is why I would NEVER stay here again: the elevator. Second day into our stay, we get trapped in the elevator. We tried the emergency phone - NO ONE ANSWERED. I suppose, at that point, we should have called 911, but we had this bizarre sense of "someone at the hotel can get us out." So... we googled the hotel and found a phone number for the front desk. We called them THREE TIMES before someone answered. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive once we got someone on the phone, calling us every few minutes to let us know what maintenance was doing and then to say the fire department was on the way. We were only trapped for 15-20 minutes and, I get it, things break down. While not common, getting trapped in an elevator is not the hotel's fault. What IS their fault is the fact that 1. the emergency phone did not work in the elevator and 2. no one answered at the hotel when we called. It was unacceptably unsafe. Here's the kicker. The next day, while my husband was in the bathroom, I kindly stepped out so he wasn't self conscious about the door not closing, and went to talk to the manager. Now was the opportunity for him to step into customer service mode and offer us something. Comp one of our rooms for a night or a voucher to McDonald's. I don't know, something? You find a bandaid in your food at a restaurant, the manager gives you the meal for free, or at least an appetizer or dessert. This was worse, we were trapped in an elevator with an emergency phone that did not work and had to be rescued by the fire department. The manager, he offered us nothing other than a bunch of excuses and reasons for why the emergency phone did not work and why no one answered the phone when we called the hotel directly. Who in the hospitably industry reacts that way to guests trapped in an elevator in their establishment? Sorry, you were trapped for a spell at my hotel and we had to get the fire department involved, let me make a bunch of excuses for why you could not get someone on the phone. It was just incompetence from someone in the position to make it right. My choices were to be graceful or to be a complete Karen and demand a comp. The Karen option felt icky, so I went with grace and left the front desk. We still have family in Ashtabula and will travel there again in the future. We will not ever stay at this hotel even if avoiding this shoddy establishment means staying 30 minutes out of our way or paying a ridiculously high rate. This hotel is just awful....
Read moreMy family and I were traveling near Austinburg last week and we needed a last minute room. We have stayed in many "Choice Family" hotels and have always been very satisfied with our rooms and the hotels in general. I was a little concerned about the reviews I had read about this particular hotel and the renovations so before I booked the hotel I called and spoke to the front desk person. I asked about the renovations and if our room would be in the area where the renovations were taking place. (We were booking a room to check in within the hour). The lady told me that there were only two rooms in the hotel that were still being renovated. She assured me that our room was completely renovated and not near the construction. When we arrived our room was in shambles....drywall flecks/paint all over the carpet, carpet debris and fibers across the floor and bathroom, lock on main door was broken and neither my husband or front desk lady could fix (pull out) the broken pull out couch. It was midnight when we were finally brought a rollaway bed...that fit awkwardly in the room. In the morning, just as I was going to step into the shower, discovered a huge loogie (yes a LOOGIE!) in the bathtub. The shower curtain had black and various colored molds growing on the bottom 15" of it. Front desk sent someone to clean the shower, replace the shower curtain and bring TP, and some other missing items to the room. After the shower was cleaned I again went to use it and discovered a used bar of soap STILL in the shower! It was about this time that the drilling and construction noise started. Remember, I was told our room was not near the construction. Actually, there was a whole crew of men working on the adjoining room. It was a complete racket and woke all the kids up. The drilling and hammering continued for the entire morning. During breakfast the power went out. As we were leaving I ripped a big whole in my pants when they got snagged on a metal bar that was sticking out from the ill-fitting rollout bed that was crammed in the room. The front desk said they would not close out our bill until the manager, who was not in yet, called us (we have yet yo hear from the manager and we have placed several calls that have not been returned and yes, the credit card was charged regardless of being told it would not be charged until the manager talked to us....) This option was suggested/offered to us by the front desk because they knew of the many failures on behalf of Sleep Inn during our 10 hour stay. Other items to note, there were no parking spots due to many trucks and construction materials. When asking the front desk where we should park she said, "I don't know, I had a hard time finding a place myself." The renovations in our room were poorly done...paint splaters everywhere on the doors, tape lines were done incorrectly so the green paint bled into the cream paint. The bathroom vanity trim is uneven and unfinished looking. Honestly, even though I have used a lot of words describing this hotel stay, there really are not adequate words to describe our shock at the state of this refurbished room. I have a child with a severe food allergy. I asked the breakfast host to see the ingredients in the omelet. She answered snarkly, "Eggs and cheese." I explained that my son has a severe allergy and that there was probably a long list of ingredients in them and could she please check (or let me check). She did finally look on the label on the box in the freezer----it was about a two inch long list of ingredients. She definitely let me know that I had caused her a lot of trouble. Another guest told her the milk pitcher lid kept falling off. She said, in her moody way, "yeah, we can't find the one that works. The lady at the front desk in the morning was nice but she could only do so much to help out the absolute worst hotel stay we have ever experienced ... Do yourself a favor and stay...
Read moreOn January 22nd 2020, my husband and I booked the Whirlpool suite for the evening. Both him and I are disabled and in extreme pain 24/7. I booked this Room for the main purpose of the Whirlpool and to relax in the jets for the night and try to get a little relief. The woman that made my reservation was extremely helpful and friendly And the process went smoothly. We check in a little late on that Wednesday night. The front desk employee was short and not too accommodating. I didn't feel like I was welcomed. He was sloppily dressed, had messy hair and just looked kind of out of place there. We walked into our Room and all I could smell was a musty odor. The Room was extremely hot because the heater unit was turned all the way up. Went for ice and the ice machine on the 1st floor was broken -and-out of service. Had to go up to the 2nd floor for ice. There was hair in the bathroom sink and in both the bathroom shower and the Whirlpool. The shower water was scalding hot and the Faucet was difficult to set. The shower curtain was way too long for the shower which in turn caused mildew and mold at the bottom of the curtain. What really upset me most was the fact that there was absolutely no stool or steps to get into the Whirlpool tub. This is upsetting because we are disabled and it made it even more difficult for us to get in the tub with no steps. Actually, that was a lawsuit waiting to happen. The floors in the Room were dirty and and unvacuumed. There was food crumbs and what appeared to be toenails or skin on the floor. Carpet between the night stands and the bed was dirty and looked to be never vacuumed. Not real sure if they changed the bedsheets from the last person in that Room. They appeared to be wrinkly and laid on when I pulled the comforter back. The rooms were very plain and undecorated. We ended up not staying the night, and just went home where we knew what we were sleeping on. When we left the hotel, we said good night and thank you to the front desk attendant who in turn just stared at us and never said anything. I used to work in housekeeping at the Hampton Inn and a Room left like this would of got me fired. If there was 1 hair found in a Room and the patron complained about it, we were sure to hear about it. So needless to say, we will not be back to this hotel. I really hope that management can get on housekeeping to do a better job cleaning and paying attention to detail in these rooms. I don't feel that this Room was worth the $115...
