The Aztec Motel & Creative Space Route 66 Seligman, Arizona
During our stay in Seligman, Arizona, I decided to visit The Aztec Motel & Creative Space. We were staying down the road at the Historic Route 66 Motel. I was curious about the motel, and I wanted to meet both Bas de Boorder ( Sabastiaan) and Anna. The funny thing is that several years ago, I met both of them at the Motel when it was being renovated. I believe they were painting an area black, which was by the office.
I walked into the office and was greeted by Anna. She was very outgoing and told Sabastiaan I was there to see the motel. Sabastiaan was great as he gave me a great tour of the Motel. The Aztec Motel was originally built in 1915 and went through the renovation in 2021.
There was something that I sensed about Sabastiaan, and I knew we both had something in common by the way he gave me the tour. We later talked about his experience in running a Motel, and I later learned that he also worked in hospitality management, which is what I had worked in most of my career. He is professional, and I could tell that he cares about the guest service experience. Both him and Anna have helped with beautifying the town of Seligman by helping clean areas in the town.
The rooms themselves are great. They are beautifully decorated in a retro and vintage motif and are spacious. The rooms all have several amenities such as a coffee maker, mini fridge, complimentary Starlink WiFi, and Roku Streaming Service. Each room also has several charging stations for your laptops, phone, and other electronic gear you may bring during your trip. There are several room types available, such as a Junior Suite, Double Rooms, and Single Rooms. The Motel is Pet Friendly, but according to the website, it is recommended to book directly with the Motel since there are only a few pet rooms available. All rooms are non-smoking, but there is a designated smoking area near the office.
As we we were taking a tour of the rooms I could not help but notice the cleanliness of the rooms. Sabastiaan explained to me that after the guest checks out that every surface is wiped down thoroughly and everything is inspected thoroughly.
The Motel also has another great amenity which many smaller motels don't have and that would be a place where people can relax, read a book, do some work, or even just have their morning coffee. The Motel has what they call their "Creative Space." This area also has a meeting space, which can be closed off. This would make great meeting space or for special events. Another amenity they offer is a complimentary breakfast, which can be found in a small brown bag. In this bag, you will find yogurt, granola bar, fruit cup, cheese, and a hard-boiled egg.
The Motel also has a great gift shop that offers colorful shirts, hats, and other souvenirs. Sabastiaan also works with local artist and vendors to help sell their products in the gift shop
This is not your typical motel but more of a beautiful boutique motel that offers their guest great rooms and amenities. The owners are great and want to give travelers a unique guest service experience. On our next visit to Seligman, we will book a room at this beautiful motel.
Thank you, Sabastiaan, Anna, and Staff, for a wonderful tour...
Read moreThe Aztec is a truly lovely place that redefines what a motel can be. The whole facility is clean; the register office is very retro and the air is filled with a welcoming scent from incense; the rooms are quaint and smell like lavender and lemongrass (part of their covid cleaning protocol), have Roku and streaming services that logout on your chosen date, sanitary napkin disposal papers (never seen that in America before), up to date plugs for charging electronics, new age locks that change codes every day upon checkout; the creative space common area is decorated with up-cycled furniture either bought or re-imagined by the owner and his wife and is also furnished with a piano, boardgames, and a dining room table for communal dining and/or meetings; the to-go breakfasts are convenient and adorable (even have vegetarian options), and the outside space has astroturf, yellow picnic tables, a vintage barbecue and an abundance of creative old fashioned paintings of times passed. There is also plenty of parking and the view of the route 66 colorful burger stand across the street is a sight to be seen.
The owner is super kind, from Holland, will give you a tour of the facility along with its history upon arrival (highly recommend asking questions about anything you see, the owner is filled with rich knowledge) and a palm reading if desired (the story behind that amenity is very intriguing). This place was one of our favorite hotels/motels we've ever stayed at and we've frequented quite a bit over our years of travel. You can definitely assume we would stay, at the Aztec Motel, again.
The only suggestions I have would be to fix the older heater/air conditioner in the room, when put on heat it has a certain burning smell but it goes away within a few minutes, and to make the rooms more accessible. The chains in the parking lot force visitors to walk all the way around to the entrance, which can be difficult when hauling luggage in the pebble...

This place is one of the most phenomenal places I've stayed in MY LIFE! The owner is from Holland and his whole family down to his two children are super friendly and accommodating. They offer a "common area" that they have dubbed THE CREATIVE SPACE but there is NOTHING common about it. It features vintage memorabilia, an ABUNDANCE of board games, a piano and more.
Now let's talk about THESE ROOMS. They have plugs with USB and C-type chargers mounted next to the beds. Each room has two queen beds. There is a roku tv, mini fridge, and keurig with local coffee provided and tea upon request but the star of this room is THE BED. THESE BEDS WILL REJUVENATE YOUR ENTIRE BODY. I don't know what type of mattress it is but when my father laid on it he was in awe and exclaimed "Oh my God! It's so soft! I sank down in it!" I, on the other hand, felt that it was firm and perfect for me and my almost two year old who, after threatening the TABLET TANTRUM, FELL FAST ASLEEP AND HAS NOT MOVED (save for breathing, which I felt obligated to check because I usually have a wild sleeper lol) so I feel like ANYONE WILL GET AMAZING SLEEP on this bed. Word of advice: DO NOT UNTUCK THE COVERS!!! SLIDE IN AND JUST BECOME ONE WITH THE BED!!! 😂 The shower water is WELL WATER and the removable shower head has like 4 or 5 settings and perfect water pressure.
This place is an AMAZINGLY hidden gem that has raised the bar for ANY away from home stays for me. PLEASE put this place on your LIFE BUCKET LIST!!!! YOU WON'T...
