BEST BURGER I'VE EVER HAD!
First of all, my 3y 8mo old daughter and I LOVED this place! The irreverent, why-are-you-taking-yourself-seriously-when-you're-not-even-God-or-at-least-a-demi-god attitude is refreshing in a world that takes itself waaaaaaay too seriously. Dude, we all end up as worm-bait, yo. Let's all try to hold hands and help each other cross the street. The attitude reflects in the fun and joie de vivre of the place. My daughter tried to open the door but couldn't. I told her the secret as to how to open the door. I giggled quietly as a Frenchman struggled to figure it out. I had to guide his son to the toilet. . .speaking of folks who might be taking themselves too seriously. 🙃
The staff. Oh wow! The mustached guy who took our order offered me straw for my drink. I'm not a straw guy so I declined. Then he squirted mustard on my daughter! She asked him to do it again! So he did! We loved it!
They had a sign that said they would be closed a certain day so everyone could attend the memorial of someone passed. . .speaking of holding hands and helping each other cross the street.
FUD. I'm a burger guy. The previous champion was Lankford Grocery in Houston. This burger was hands down the most deliciously greasy burger I've ever had. It soaked through the papers it was wrapped in. For those of you who don't remember when McDonald's fries were easily the best, let me translate: this burger is a fatty burger cooked in the beef tallow (fat) drippings of the previous burgers. In one word, delicious. There's a Malcomb Gladwell podcast about How McDonald's Broke My Heart. Listen to it for more insight.
As for my daughter, this was the only meal where she ate ALL of her food - the corndog. Vienna Beef, of course. Also the first time she ate a corn dog. And we ordered a dipped cone. Holy cow we made a mess all over ourselves.
THIS IS THE PLACE LIFE IS LIVED! In all its messiness, greasiness, and silly joyous glory!
And now the punchline: underneath the silliness belies a dead-seriousness about how we should be to and with each other as we navigate the chaos of life. If you're looking for it, you'll see the message hiding in plain sight.
If this review sounds a little odd and possibly cryptic, it's because it is. If I explained it, I'd be ruining the surprise. When you go, just roll with the surprise. Put your phone down. Explore. Embrace the chaos. Chaos is the great mystery of the Divine Universe, or so I think. Delgadillo's does, and I think you'll have a grand ole time there too if you do. Just...
Read moreCLASSIC ROUTE 66! Delgadillo's Snow Cap in Seligman, Arizona! This legendary Route 66 burger stand opened 70 years ago in 1953. Founder Juan Delgadillo built the restaurant with his bare hands using scrap railroad lumber. He famously worked at his burger stand until the day he died, in June of 2004 at the age of 88. He was a legend.
Juan was famous for his sense of humor. He became cherished by tourists, travelers and locals for his antics, pranks and jokes. Mislabled doors, deceptive menu item descriptions, prop comedy and witty remarks were all a part of the culture Juan created at his little stand. His spirit remains, and every employee at the stand even two decades after his passing embodies his sense of humor and child spirited fun.
It’s easily the most memorable attribute of the eatery, and jumps it all the way up to the top of my list of most memorable Route 66 roadside attractions. This is an absolute must stop visit if you’re passing by on 40 in either direction in Arizona.
Oh and the food? Outstanding. It’s the kind of basic, comfort inducing, nostalgia quality food you can taste in your memories. The burger patties are griddled 1/4lb slabs. The fries have crinkles and are extra crispy. The milkshakes are rich, creamy and made the right way.
The counter attendant proudly presented me with a thimble sized cup of milkshake and declared “one extra extra small milkshake!” It’s a joke a second in this place.
It’s what Juan would have wanted. Everyone there is invested in the experience he created and curated until the day he died. It’s quite remarkable.
When you build something so special that it lives on after your physical body is gone: that’s how you become a legend.
The legend lives on in Seligman Arizona. Make plans to experience it yourself the next...
