Penury Hall Bed & Breakfast — Hotel in Southwest Harbor

We stayed for three nights at Penury Hall and just loved it. If you are looking for generic, plastic and veneer standard hotel type accommodation don't go here. It is so much better than that, Gretchen is a wonderful lady who makes you feel like you are her temporary family.||||We have a very comfortable room and bed that was cosy but very adequate. Our children had two singles especially made up from a king size bed.||||Breakfast is served in the dining room and was the most wonderful home cooked fayre you can imagine, the blueberry pancakes and bacon were perfection.||||Gretchen has been in the quiet town of Southwest Harbour for many years and her tips on what to see and do and where to eat were all great.||||The restaurants are just a few steps away and easy access to Mount Arcadia, Long Lake and all of the southern points of interest are only a short drive away.||||We truly loved this place and Gretchen in particular, she made our vacation special. As others have stated, it's quirky, it's dated, it could probably use some upgrades and sprucing up here and there, but I'd stay again in a heartbeat. Arriving on MDI with no place to stay on the Sat night of Labor Day weekend, Gretchen answered the phone and our prayers to find a place to stay the night. Gretchen is wonderful, a local who's been in the area a long time and is a wealth of info. Chatty but respectful of your privacy. Anything we needed she had. No TV's in room, but that's OK. Bathrooms a little dated and thin on amenities, not a problem for us. Breakfast was delicious - Gretchen was up early and cooked for us and another young couple staying at the Inn - and Gretchen joined us for breakfast - it was delightful!!!! Reasonable compared to what you'll pay elsewhere in SW Harbor and on the Island. Walking distance to some GREAT restaurants. This is not a B & B. Very overpriced for the conditions. The photos on the website are very misleading. Very dirty, smelly, carpeting disgustingly dirty, hair in food, bathrooms are either across the landing of the front stairs or down the hall. Got bug bites sitting in living room.....fleas I assume. Doors only lock from inside the rooms with cheap latches that are not even lined up properly to lock. Dining room floor has a definite downhill slant and the runner on the table was filthy and crusty. Shower curtain clipped on with clothes pin. I picked up the plastic sheet in the room to read the house rules and it was all sticky and gross. If price was much lower.......but for a true B & B experience this is not the place for you.
