This is not a hostel but a flop house. Issues! Staff, there were five staff living here with guests. The staff were the Main problem. They had no customer service experience. The did not have any hostel knowledge. The staff were scary looking and illegals. One staff would do laundry at 2 am! She would clean the shared kitchen at 5 am while guest are sleeping! To not help guests she pretended not to speak English. Other staff had dogs barking all day running into rooms. I'm allergic to these mutts. Bathrooms, our shared bathroom wasn't cleaned for four days. Theres no shampoo, soap or even fresh towels or wash cloth proved. No hot water in shower and even the light in the shower was out! Toilet paper too was always out. Bedrooms, you sink into the old mattress. TV didn't work, missing lights at the sinks, wholes in the sheets, I even had mosquitos and moths flying in my room from the broken window. Kitchen, there are two kitchens. Guest are not to use these during sertian times but staff use them all the time! The exhaust fan knob is missing, you have 5 staff living here so the refrigerator and storage is greatly reduced. Also, with all of the freeloaders staff you actually can't even use the kitchen. Deck/Outside. You have some kind of deck to sit at. A broken hot tub that breads mosquitoes! Yes, you get bitten if you sit outside. No bar or and food! Security, there is a code for the gate, house door and room. The codes are never changed. I found that I would use different codes to unlock my door so the codes locks do not work. There are no lockers in rooms to to lock your personals up at as they have at real hostels. I did see cameras but like everything else I am sure they are broken. They didn't even photo copy my id so the only info they have is a debit card. I bet Gram didn't do any background check on the free staff so your credit card info may be stolen. They have really no info on any guest there if there is a theft or incident. Staff do not man the desk nor are they really available during your stay. The cell number they use is often necessary responded to. I sent several with little respoce and always hours later. If you are a single lady again there are no other visitors so you are on your own in a unsafe Location!!! Location, the hostel is 6 blocks from a grocery store and half a mile from Yarbor Historical area. It's not safe to walk at night. They do not have any bikes for visitors nor Ebikes. Hostel, this is a flop house! They do not have any guest ice breakers daily events. There no free passes at night clubs for boat tours. There's no free Happy hours or family meals to meet other guests. Again, this is not a hostel! As you can see, I did request my money back but got no response from the owner Gram. You have...
Read moreNestled just outside downtown in a quiet neighborhood, Gram's Place is may be as unique of a hostel as they come. Mix your average neighborhood home with a tree house, and a few courtyards and you get a good feel for the place. Colorful, classic, and eclectic decor is found throughout this place. All of the staff is very friendly, helpful, and wonderful host during our 2 days here. If you can catch the manager Rhonda, when the mood hits her just right, you may find her in the kitchen baking a fresh batch of cookies. Have a seat at the kitchen table or the livingroom, pick up a guitar to strum, make a fresh pot of coffee, and you may can snag a cookie for yourself ;) They have laundry on site, a soaking pool, a few courtyards, private and mixed dorm rooms, a byob bar, outside bathroom & shower, and a couple of treetop lookouts to relax at. Also, BREAKFAST is included: eggs, coffee, some fruit, bread, pancake mix, and a few jams and peanut butters. We visited in July and stayed in Amsterdam, a 6-bed mixed-dorm room. The beds were more on the springy side, good length if you're under 6 ft tall, without any privacy curtains, and we slept okay. My mate had a bit more trouble sleeping than I did. It was pretty humid while there, and the first night I woke up and had to ask for an extra fan for the room - this made a huge difference in the overall room temp (we were sleeping in the middle of the upper room). We just needed a crash spot for a few days, and I'm glad we chose to stay here! Good experience :) Extra Tips •Temperature: a private room may be a better option with it having it's own cooling unit if you're worried about temperatures. •Mosquito's: we had no issues or problems with them despite other...
Read moreI am currently staying here and have stayed here once before, for a shorter period of time. If you are looking for a laid back place where you can smoke weed, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a clean and drama free place, notsomuch. ||Bathrooms and kitchen are almost never clean, the blanket on my bed literally smelled like someone else's B.O. and one of the residents had a conflict with a roommate over stolen drugs, and called the police. ||Overall it is a definite budget stay, the rate was good and for the most part, all the guests have been really interesting and very nice and friendly. Staff seems okay, Bruce has been very good with questions and I've sensed no ill will on thier part, however, they could really clean more. The interiors are very dark due to them only using one lightbulb per room and the mirrors and pictures scattered throughout are all broken and everything is filthy dusty. I've had to wipe off every surface I've used and with a full time cleaning lady who didn't even bother to replace the soaking wet bathmat daily, I am not really sure I will be back.||The dorm bathroom amenities included one roll of tp and a bottle of dish soap, the 'breakfast', includes the cheapest coffee, eggs, milk, white bread and spotted fruit they can get at the food mart. Would be nice to see something other than bananas and those gross red apples you avoided in grade school, maybe some healthier, fresher options. ||Anyhow, overall not a terrible experience at all, but really lacking in the 'free breakfast' and cleanliness departments. It seems like it was once a cool place and is slowly developing into a dump due to lack of care. Again, not...
