During a camping trip in northern New Mexico, I had a medical situation. Since I had to drive to Taos to pick up a prescription, a kind family member offered to pay for a hotel/motel room for me for the night. I was supposed to stay at the Quality Inn, but they ended up not having a pet friendly room available. Anyway, my family member looked at this "lodge" as an alternative.
She called Taos Valley Lodge to ask about the pet fee. During the conversation, the (ostensibly male) desk clerk told her I would not be allowed to check in without the credit card used to make the reservation. She explained the room was for me, she was in another state, and I would not have her credit card. The desk clerk reiterated that I would not be allowed to check in without presenting the credit card used to make the reservation along with my ID. When my family member continued to try to explain the situation, the clerk told her to hang on while he went to double check. My family member had to hand the phone to her husband so she could talk to someone at Booking(dot)com who was trying to help her sort out this mess. While my family member's husband was waiting, the call was disconnected. We figured Taos Valley Lodge was out of the running, so we all moved on.
Well. When Booking(dot)com sent an email about the pet friendly location they'd found for me in Taos, guess what. It was at the Taos Valley Lodge. My family member was hesitant to accept the reservation if the desk clerk wasn't going to let me check in without my family member's credit card in hand. So I called the Taos Valley Lodge, and the fellow who answered the phone gave me the same song and dance. He even asked if he hadn't already talked to me. I said he had talked to my family member, and added, "You hung up on him." He didn't deny he had hung up. He didn't even try to say the call must have dropped. He just said, oh, because he knew what he had done!!!
He was adamant that I could not check in without the credit card, so I just gave up on him and the Taos Valley Lodge. I thanked him for his time and hung up while he continued to tell me I couldn't check in without a credit card that was in a different state.
The desk clerk then apparently told Booking(dot)com that he couldn't fulfill the reservation because he didn't have any pet friendly rooms to rent.
Oh well. I ended up staying at the Historic Taos Inn where all of the staff was wonderful and kind and no one asked to see my ID or my family member's...

These people lost my registration card and at midnight a man came banging on my door and yelling that I must open the door and that there was no record of me paying for my room. The man was extremely rude and treated our family as if we were some kind of criminals. He expected me to open the door in the middle of the night at a hotel where the rooms open to the outside parking lot; and he expected me to believe that he was from the front desk. My children were terrified. I told him I would call the police to get him to stop banging on the door and he said "fine, I'll wait for them at the front desk". I called the front desk and asked what was this all about and the woman told me the same thing... there was no record of me paying and that there was ski equipment in that room. I told her that there was no equipment in the room and that I had paid for two nights. She expected me to remember who had checked me in (at midnight and after such a rude awakening!). I was unable to sleep the rest of the night and my wife and children were shaking in fear. When I complained the next morning and asked for my money back, the manager only refunded the 2nd night since she said "you already slept one night". I told her I did not sleep that night since this guy came banging on the door threatening us.
These people were not sincerely sorry for their disorganization and causing such an unpleasant experience for our family. They said "sorry but we just did not know who was in that room". Our family should not be treated like this just because of their administrative mess. When I told her that they could have called into the room instead of banging on the door she said that she sent the guy because of a report of a door that was not closing and that that was the main reason he went to our room; to check the door. I told her that was not what he said when he banged on the door. And that was not what she said when I called the front desk in the middle of the night. These were some very rude and unprofessional people.
In addition, rooms are smelly. They actually gave me a different room because the first one stunk to...
