I will always rave about Old Dutch Inn and the owner, Jen, as well as her wonderfully knowledgeable mother, Mary, as they made my vision of a thirtieth anniversary marriage vow renewal, along with a thirty-fifth college reunion come to reality. We had visited this delightful spot a year prior for a romantic getaway (and it is *the perfect spot for that!) and seeing that the Inn has nine rooms and several gathering spots: a game room, a room with a fireplace and couches, and another room with a long table, I thought it would be an amazing experience to rent the entire Inn for a private event.
I spoke to Jen and we spent the next year putting together our heads to curate a list of experiences for our guests to choose from - outdoor activities, antiquing in Hudson, viewing art sculptures, even a corn maze, all within an easy drive, which allowed our guests to each pick what suited them best. Our marriage vow renewal was held right at the Inn!
My guests had such a good time (and they traveled from Georgia, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, all over the United States!) that we have decided to make it an annual event!
I’m planning to come back in the winter because I can’t wait to see the lovely town blanketed in snow. This is, without a doubt, my favorite place to stay. And I want to try out each of the rooms, as they are all different!❤️
The accommodations at Old Dutch Inn are astounding. No detail is overlooked. The sheets (and I laugh as I write this) are so soft and when you visit, you will remember my saying this. Jen, the Inn owner, is always available if you need her. There is a delightful spot to get coffee and breakfast called The Morningbird Cafe across the street, as well as a bagel spot for a more substantial breakfast. Truly, if you are looking for a place to stay in the Hudson Valley/Berkshire region, you will never regret booking at the...
Read moreCars fresh from the showroom used to have a “new car” smell; Old Dutch Inn (ODI) has a fresh cut lumber aroma that says, “new build.” In fact, a local family has transformed an 1860-ish Inn into a modern—and very enjoyable—contribution to the lodging scene in Kinderhook in the Upper Hudson Valley. In the reception, there is a modern rendition of an old Dutch master’s painting of flowers in a vase against a deep black background. The modern twist is that the flowers were grown in Stuyvesant, the town next to Kinderhook, and were chosen individually for the photo, which was then digitized and blown up, creating a welcoming modern masterpiece.
The ground floor has a community table ideal for staging a charcuterie board of local produce. You don’t want to party? How about a game of chess or shooting pool? If you want contemplation: find the room with yoga mats and some Pilates equipment. Need a place for the kids to be kids? The ODI has a cozy room stocked with dolls, games, books, and a play tent.
A modern elevator transports you to the second and third floors.
Our room on the third floor was spacious and very light, including the bathroom stocked with Malin & Goetz shampoos and cleansers, walk-in shower, and deep claw-footed tub. The sheets on the bed were soft and luxurious. I thought Frette. But actually they were from Comphy. And the pillows are Frette. Since the room looked down on the Village Square, I thought it might be noisy: it was not. The wifi connection was adequate but we were not streaming a movie. Parking is easy.
The ODI is very close to becoming a “boutique destination hotel.” Just a few tweaks needed: comfy chairs in the room for reading (and good reading lights); an upgrade to the coffee (Keurig machine) and real half-and-half/milk; possibly a night light for the bathroom. And, voila, a boutique hotel ideal for a...
Read moreKinderhook is such an amazing place, and now even more so with the inclusion of the Old Dutch Inn. Jen, the proprietor, has artfully breathed new life into the sole source of lodging in this hamlet. Painstakingly restoring a 200 year-old building back to it's former glory and doing a service to the community and history by not letting this one-of-a-kind establishment fade into disrepair.
As a guest you can see this attention to detail throughout the building. The rooms are spacious, and afford a plethora of creature comforts like elegant bathrooms, a relaxing lounge to kick your feet up for a break, a dedicated game room, and luxurious bedding that will make you want to sleep in late each morning.
Kinderhook, a derivation of dutch Kinderhoek (meaning Children's Corner) is a diamond in the rough of American history. We've been here a few times, and for our most recent trip we focused on the varied dutch influences, including the homestead of Martin Van Buren, the 8th president of the United States. There are countless other mansions from the late 1700's to feast your eyes on and help you reflect on what life must have been like.
If that's not your cup of tea, there are numerous other fun activities like Omi (Sculpture Park), Pick your own at Samascott Orchards, and a burgeoning food scene in town. We haven't yet explored the dedicated bike trails to either Hudson or Albany but we look forward to doing so on...
