When I just checked in, I immediately noticed how old and flimsy the doors to the rooms are. Sound isolation is at a zero, but some rooms are updated and do seem like they have been somewhat soundproofed. I can hear the words: āHousekeeping!ā, on the other end of the hall and they floor boards creaking directly above.
My room was updated, meaning a new bathroom and a fabric wall panel behind the TV. However the bathroom was extremely dirty right off the bat. Hairs in the sink, on the floors, on the towels. Stains on both robes. Very dirty floor tiles, I could literally see dirt marks left by someone who wore shoes in the bathroom. The floors in the bathroom in fact look like they havenāt seen a mop in 2 months.
I did not dare to walk around the room without slippers. The beds do seem old, you can almost feel all the springs and I had to sleep on top of a cover.
The first time the room was cleaned during my stay, the sheets and towels were changed (hair on new towels was also present but alas) and the trash cans were emptied. The dust and bathroom was not addressed. I went down to let the front desk know, they apologiesed and assured me that my room would be properly cleaned.
I had high hopes, but I returned after turn down (meaning housekeeping came to my room twice that day, you would think that it would be thoroughly cleaned). The only thing that was different this time was that they vacuumed the floors. They duped the dust from the vacuum in the toilet and didnāt flush (Iāll attach a picture). The floor in the bathroom actually appeared even more dirty and the sheets were not changed.
The moldings and the doors look really bad. They have a really thick layer of paint over them. Not sure how many times they were repainted but itās time for an update. Besides the paint, they are completely covered in scratches, scrapes and scuffs. Some are pretty deep and it just isnāt a pleasant experience at such a hotel, especially with LHW status. Not very inviting at all, just old and worn out.
The minibar was almost half empty when I checked in and not once was it replenished. Not sure that automated mini bars really work well, I moved some stuff around to fit a sandwich and Iām not sure if I was charged because the front desk didnāt give me a print out of the charges during check out. Never seen that before, in any country and in any 5 star hotel. The reception ALWAYS asks to review the charges and make sure that everything seems right.
When I came to the front desk I said I wanted to check out and the guy attending said āyouāre all setā. No mention of the charges until I asked and he said āwe will email you the invoiceā. No one asked me about my stay when I was leaving, didnāt give me the time of day so Iām posting it here.
Other honorable mentions: had someone elseās used shower gel (complete with hair as well, to complement the towels and robes perhaps), piece of what seems like yellow gum on the carpet, fingerprints on the glass tabletops. Believe me, Iām not nit picking and if I was, this review would be much longer.

My experiences here, spanning at least six visits in the past two years, have been nothing short of remarkable, a testament to this esteemed establishment's exceptional service and environment.
What sets the Hay-Adams apart is its prime location, a stone's throw from the White House, and the extraordinary lengths the hotel and its staff go to ensure every stay is memorable. The hotel has been my sanctuary during special events, going above and beyond to help with anything we needed.
The true sense of the Hay-Adams experience lies in its staff, a remarkable team of professionals who become more like family with each visit.
