August is late winter in Uruguay, and the World Heritage seaside town of Colonia del Sacramento is especially welcoming to the handful of visitors who come through this time of year. The Posada del Ángel was extravagantly hospitable to me and the other two guests who were staying during my three nights there. Count a warm welcome as a good augury of a happy stay.||The Posada is a 7-minute walk from the ferry terminal, in the historic center of the town (though 2 blocks outside the Portuguese-built original wall). I was assigned Room 12, which looks out over the swimming pool and patio -- a room that also has excellent WiFi, a serviceable writing table, and a bathroom that, while tight, has more than just the basics. Indeed, know that the bidet is quite particular: it sends a jet spray upward, so the guest should settle onto it before turning on the water, and can then luxuriate in a warm bottom shower.||While, as I say, the writing table in the room is serviceable, I preferred to use the common room just outside my door for writing postcards and reading on-line. Perhaps the tables are snapped up by the full house of guests in high season, but I had the room all to myself in winter, with a view not only to the swimming pool but also to the Río Plata.||Breakfast was adequate, though aficionados of espresso-based coffees will be disappointed that their morning caffeination is drip-brewed rather than expressed. While the breakfast service starts at 7:30, the staff accommodated my early departure on my last morning by setting it up for me at 6:45. I was duly...
Read moreWe stayed here for one night while visiting Colonia del Sacramento from Montevideo before getting the ferry to Argentina the next day. We arrived quite early, well before normal check in time but were warmly received and were able to check in immediately. The room was quite small and quant with a decent sized shower room. Although basically clean, the light switches as well as the controls for TV and Aircon were quite dirty but easily cleaned with a wet-wipe and sanitiser. The biggest disappointment surprise was that the quilt did not have a cover and was quite dirty although there was a clean sheet below it, I would have complained otherwise or if we had been staying for more than one night. The hotel is well located between the bus station, the ferry terminal and the centre of the old town. The garden and pool area are lovely and very well maintained, a nice place to relax after a walk around the town. Breakfast was very good and served in a pleasant breakfast room. The freshly squeezed orange juice was served in a single serving in a glass, everywhere else we stayed (7 hotels in 4 countries over 3 weeks) the juice was in jugs and you could help yourself. The staff are friendly and helpful and we would stay here again but it does need a good spring clean with better attention to detail and they need to use quilt covers on...
Read moreMy husband and I are seasoned travelers in our seventies who stayed at Posada del Angel on March 18 and 19 2018. We arrived there from Boston, as a side trip to Colonia from a 3 week stay in Buenos Aires , Argentina .We arrived in the midst of a really bad rain storm that lasted several hours. Out room was not yet ready and had 2 hours to wait. There was a sitting room upstairs where we were directed but when we requested a hot drink we were told they could not provide any even for a fee. There were torrential rains and restaurants/coffee shops were at least 10 minute walk under the rain, we were offer an umbrella and the staff member jokingly said you should really take a walk under the rain, as" water was purifying." I am not sure I shared her idea, tired after a ferry trip, in need of coffee and a warm dry environment. . |The room assigned to us was large but rather dark and was in between the reception on one side and the breakfast room, also used by staff as lunch room.It was noisy almost at all times. We requested a change of room but were told they were no room available and they will try later for a change. That did not happen.|Posada del Angel had a regular bathroom, with nice hot water, but the whole posada has a tired look and the decorations are old and tasteless.|I would not...
