IS this the best market in the world? Quite possibly... been to scores around the world and seen nothing better so far... a stupendous range of produce much of which was picked just the day before... then driven through the night to be presented on stalls opening from the wee small hours on Saturday morning...in a massive hall nearly half a km long housing the stalls of literally scores of farmers and wholesalers providing virtually every kind of fresh fruit and vegetable available on this continent... but wait ... that's not all... you can also shop farm-fresh eggs, your fresh meat, poultry, a staggering array of seafood fresh from the trawlers that morning, delicatessen supplies, fresh bread and pastries, every kind of fresh nuts and spices, farm honey, flowers, plants, a caterers/bulky goods supermarket, Asian goods mini-marts, and stalls with all your kitchen, laundry, bathroom and many beauty products.
You can get your watch recharged or repaired on-the-spot, pick up the latest electronic accessories, games and even a range of clothes and underwear - all in the one shed, a true one-stop shop.
You can get great coffee and breakfast/snacks at the cafes or food stalls... and take a break...
Over in another huge adjoining shed you will find Paddys market bric-a-brac stalls with everything from designer clothes, shoes, sunniest and more.. to tools, electricals, computer, renovation fittings, hardware and 'garage sales' etc.
There's yet ANOTHER large shed beyond with dozens of fresh flower and plant stalls as well as flower hardware, decorating and wrapping materials... you need to be there before 10am for this one...
All of this at wholesale or trade prices... from food to hardware... no need to visit the Supermarket or Bunnings...
There's lots of parking, but the place is naturally busy... so preferably get there between 5am.and 8am to drive straight in and get the very best of every stall...
Bargain hunters come later ... 11am ,- 1pm.. when the stall holders are clearing out...but you risk not getting the best choices...
TIP 1: Seek out the actual farmer stalls for the very best and freshest produce... some.picked and packed just hours before...
Don't be put off by the photos of boxes of produce... you can buy almost everything in the market by the KG or less on Saturdays (and Fridays... reduced size customer market)... you can buy a single punnet of Strawberries/blueberries... or a tray/box... you can buy all other supplies by the unit or kg Measure....
TIP 2: it's strictly cash... so don't turn up with your credit card... or you'll have to head off to one of the many ATMs on the premises...
TIP 3: No need to worry about carrying all your purchases... you can hire supermarket trolleys at each end of the main shed... or take your own trolley if you have...
TIP 4: Take a cooler bag with some cooler blocks or gas station ice for your cold purchases... meat, poultry, delicatessen etc.
TIP 5: There are plenty of toilets/rest rooms, also catering for disabled
TIP 6: Avoid pre-packed fruit and vegetable items (select your own) and always ask where these came from.. occasionally you will see cheap junk from China. Don't touch it.
TIp 7: it's ok to 'sample' ... most stallholders put tasters out, but if they don't, just ask them to cut you a sample

Read morePaddy’s Markets in Flemington is an absolute gem for anyone looking to buy fresh, high-quality produce at unbeatable prices. I’ve been coming here every second Saturday morning at 4am, and it’s become an experience I genuinely look forward to. There’s something magical about starting the day surrounded by the hustle and bustle of market life and having access to the freshest fruit and vegetables Australia has to offer.
The quality of the produce is outstanding, and over time, you really get to know who your “go-to” vendors are. These relationships make the experience even more special, as many of the sellers are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and take pride in their offerings. Whether it’s perfectly ripened avocados, vibrant bunches of kale, or the juiciest oranges, you can always find what you need – and often discover seasonal surprises.
The prices are another reason Paddy’s Markets stand out. Compared to what you’d pay at supermarkets, the savings are phenomenal. I’ve noticed that the value becomes even more apparent over time, especially as I’ve gotten better at spotting the best deals and forming connections with my favorite vendors.
One of the best parts of shopping here so early is the energy. The market is alive with activity, yet it feels peaceful and productive before the rest of the world wakes up. It’s the perfect time to stock up on fresh ingredients for the week ahead while avoiding the crowds that come later in the day.
If you’re someone who values freshness, affordability, and a great community atmosphere, I can’t recommend Paddy’s Markets in Flemington enough.
