As you can see from the recent comments, the service quality at Delhaize Chazal has gone downhill. It was never fantastic, but the slide really began about two years ago. So… where to start? Weekends are now packed with student workers wheeling boxes around during peak hours. Young staff aren’t the issue—if everyone is a student, though, who’s there to guide them? Next up: self-checkout. First came the 15-item limit—fair enough for “quick” lanes, even if 15 packets of gum hardly equal 15 bulky items. Then they added a “scan your loyalty card” rule before you can even begin. On top of that, the new half-red/half-green status lights are just confusing. Quantum self-checkouts, anyone? Several regular lanes stay closed for no obvious reason—I doubt it’s to save electricity—so the queues stretch on. At the self-checkouts, “partial” control checks often turn into full rescans, and some staff forget to pop the items back into your bags afterward. That’s what happens when you run everything on student power with zero oversight. These changes came in bit by bit, which makes me wonder if management is running some weird experiment: “How bad can we let it get before shoppers leave?” (Even if the alternative stores are only slightly less bad.) I don’t want to bash the staff—many of them are clearly doing their best—but the strategic decisions from store or chain management are, frankly, idiotic. It’s a supermarket, not rocket science. The attached photo of the closed self-checkout stations and the queue says it all. I’m seriously considering shopping elsewhere; incompetence deserves consequences. Service quality in Brussels is already pretty low, and options nearby are limited, but I’ll find something. Product quality? Fine. Service? Truly terrible.

Today I got accused of stealing at the self scan. After coming here regularly for the last 11 years spending thousands on groceries today it turns out I had a can of beer worth 1,09€ in my possession which somehow did not get registered when I scanned it. A mistake was made, not sure how since I explicitly remember scanning it, but it happened. I was then made to pay a fine for 50€ and told that next time it will be 5000€. So much for having a spotless record for over a decade. Obviously I have no interests in taking the risk of being fined 5000€ some day in the future for something which is a mathematical inevitably which means Delhaize has lost themselves another regular client. Also the last two times I bought the salmon sashimi it was no longer fresh enough to be eaten raw...

J ai vu d autre caissier faire la même chose plusieur fois TOUJOURS À DES FEMMES ET ÇA FINIT TOUJOURS PAR VOS CAISSIERS QUI SE TROMPE MAIS PAR CONTRE ILS NOUS TAPE BIEN LA HONTE PENDANT 15 À 20MIN ALORS QU ON EST INNOCENT ET QU ON FAIT JUSTE NOS COURSES.

Management has changed and it shows!

Today I got accused of stealing a sad cucumber that I failed to manually validate and a pack of ham that I forgot at the register and never made it into my bag.

The manager called me a thief and proceeded to tell me the following nonsense: my picture was to be taken for it to be plastered at the entrance of the shop and near the registers (a flagrant infraction of the GDPR) I needed to pay an administrative fine of 250€ if I wanted to leave the shop, but because she was very nice she was to leave it at 100€ (totally illegal!!!) If I refused she was going to call the police and they were going to fine me 350€ in the spot (an outrageous lie). Mind I hadn't yet paid my shopping or gone through the barrier.

I told her to call the police. When they arrived, the police proceeded to inform her that: I haven't stolen anything since I haven't scanned my ticket to leave the shop. This administrative fine of hers is illegal and she has no authority or right to threaten clients with it. That she is conducting herself disrespectfully towards them and towards me. The police nevertheless took my ID details. Needless to say I refused to spend a penny more on this establishment after such an ordeal, so I decided not to take the groceries home. The manager tried to force me to buy them and the police needed to tell her once again that I am within my rights.

I have been banned for life from the store after 15 years of almost daily shopping, thousands of euros spent and a spotless record after hundreds of random controls. Not that I care, I would have never return to a place that treats people this way.

Scan your cucumbers people!!!

UPDATE:

I have filed a complaint with the Delhaize brand. If anyone else finds or has found themselves in this situation, please do file a complaint with the brand. Here is the link to their claims form: https://help.delhaize.be/s/contactsupport?language=fr

I have also consulted a jurist from Test Achats who not only re-stated that the pictures and the fines are illegal, but that she has no legal grounds to ban me from the store. If you have committed no crimes, you are not disturbing the peace of the store or you do not pose a risk for the staff of the other clients, you cannot de denied access to the store.

Not that I want...

Je me suis senti insulté, humilié, madame.

Cordialement Un...
