Sunfood Supermarket is a fairly decent Chinese grocery store that offers a wide range of everyday essentials. One of the biggest advantages is its pricing. Compared to other Chinese supermarkets in Markham and the Greater Toronto Area, the prices at Sunfood are generally more affordable, especially for basic groceries like rice, noodles, snacks, and sauces. For budget-conscious shoppers, it can be a good place to stock up on staples.
That said, the quality and freshness of certain items can be inconsistent. The produce section is quite large, but fruits and vegetables are often hit or miss. Some days, you might find fresh greens and ripe fruits, while other times the produce can look wilted or close to spoiling. The seafood and meat sections are similarly unpredictable. While they do carry a variety of fish, shellfish, and meats, they don’t always appear fresh, and the smell in the seafood area can be off-putting. The bakery and dairy sections are serviceable, but again, freshness is not guaranteed. It really depends on when you go and how recently the stock has been replenished.
In terms of store layout, Sunfood carries most of the essentials you’d expect from a Chinese supermarket. There are plenty of frozen goods, packaged snacks, sauces, dried goods, and refrigerated items. However, one noticeable downside is the removal of their BBQ and gourmet food section, which used to be a popular feature. Without that, the store lacks some of the convenience and variety that other supermarkets in the area still offer.
Customer service is another area that needs improvement. While not all staff are unfriendly, many of them come across as indifferent or unhelpful. It can be difficult to get assistance, and there have been times when staff seemed annoyed when asked questions. Additionally, the checkout experience can be frustrating. It’s important to carefully check your receipt before leaving, as there have been instances where items were accidentally overcharged. Also, many of the items that are advertised as “on sale” are either close to their expiration date or already expired, so it’s worth taking the time to inspect those items closely before purchasing.
Overall, I shop at Sunfood mainly because it’s close to my house, and it’s convenient for quick grocery runs. However, if I had more time or lived closer to other options, I would likely choose a different supermarket with better product quality and customer service. Sunfood is okay if you’re on a budget and need something fast, but just be aware of what you’re buying. In the end, you get what...
Read moreI had a really terrible experience with this supermarket and will report to various government authorities about this terrible and endangering experience, wishing to warn the public NOT TO PURCHASE FROM THUS SUPERMARKET
23 SEPTEMBER 2025
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
I am writing to formally express my serious concerns regarding a distressing incident involving the sale of rotten beef slices at SUNFOOD SUPERMARKET on September 20, 2025. This experience not only affected me personally but poses a significant risk to the health and safety of our community in Markham.
Upon purchasing the beef slices, it was detected that they were spoiled. In an effort to rectify this situation, I approached the supermarket for a refund. Unfortunately, my request was denied due to the lack of a physical receipt. However, the QR code (726670517050) on the packaging - see picture enclosed clearly indicated that the meat was supplied by CBC TRADING MEAT WHOLESALE, and then redistributed by SUNFOOD SUPERMARKET and landed on our household with our purchase on 20 SEPTEMBER 2025.
What was particularly distressing was the treatment I received from the customer service staff and managers at the SUNFOOD SUPERMARKET located at Denison Centre, 1661 Denison St, Markham, ON L3R 6E5.
Not only was my request for a refund or exchange dismissed, but I was also met with rudeness and disbelief regarding the quality of the product I had purchased. This level of customer service is unacceptable and most importantly these spoiled meats impose serious health risks to residents of Markham who are buying these same types of products from SUNFOOD SUPERMARKET.
The implications of selling spoiled or rotten meat extend beyond individual complaints. It poses serious health risks to consumers, including foodborne illnesses that can arise from consuming contaminated products. The continuation of such practices not only jeopardizes the health of residents but also undermines public trust in local food retailers.
I urge you to take immediate action by investigating SUNFOOD SUPERMARKET and their practices regarding food safety and customer service. It is imperative that measures are put in place to ensure the quality of food products sold to the public and to protect consumers from such hazardous situations...
Read moreTerrible shopping experience ever in Canada! The staffs there are very impolite, impatient and rude, treating you like you owe them a lot of money. You also should be careful about your final bill, pay attention to it, they intentionally charged you higher price for some items. When I caught them doing so, they denied it and insisted that what I got are the more expensive ones even though I showed them where exactly I go the items from. They still just denied these unambiguous evidence. What I could do was then asked for return for the items. The girl who was working at the Customer Service Center was extremely rude and tried to keep me waiting all the time. She insisted checking my credit card number and detail information before give me the refund. I told her I did not feel comfortable to give her my card info, the return should be able go through when I chip in my credit card which I just made the payment. But she insisted she want to see the detail information of my card. I have to give show the detail information for my credit card to her eventually in order to get back my money. I was cautious that I should not release my credit card info since my family's credit information was stolen after they did their groceries in this supermarket before. I am very skeptical why the staff there insisted to see my credit card information before she could refund me the money. I just made my payment and found the staff overcharged me, and I then asked for solving the issue right away. If I find later and fraud happened to my credit, I will definitely report to the Police. I then complained to the manager on duty, the reply from the manager was that he could do nothing since it is hard for him to find better staffs...
