I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with Epicerie Deli Queen was so terrible that I have to warn others. If you value quality, freshness, and basic customer respect, avoid this placeâespecially for important occasions.
For my birthday, I decided to try their Napoleon cake based on good reviews. My boyfriend bought it, and I was excited to taste it. But when we cut it, we were shocked. The cake was awfulâthick, dry layers, stale cream, and a bizarre taste reminiscent of ham or sausage. It seemed old, possibly a week or more. None of my guests could eat more than a bite. Imagine looking forward to your birthday cake, only for it to ruin the celebration.
The next day, my boyfriend returned to the store, hoping for an apology or a replacement. Instead, he was told, âYou should have bought a small one first to see if you liked it.â Seriously? We know what a Napoleon cake should taste likeâthis wasnât about preference; they sold us a stale, inedible cake! He left it there, realizing arguing was pointless.
A responsible business would have acknowledged the mistake, but instead, they chose arrogance. So, consider yourself warnedâthink twice before buying from Deli Queen. Plenty of bakeries sell fresh cakes without blaming customers for their...
Read moreBeen going there reluctantly on a rare occasion to pick up a couple of items not found elsewhere. I would like to go more often but unless you are Russian speaking , you are viewed with suspicion by unfriendly staff , I am guessing the old Soviet way of suspicion is still around for some. NEVER a thank you after you pay . I have never bothered writing a review due to rarely going there. Today however amongst other items I bought a small chunk of Russian sunflower halva that is cut up and wrapped in the store. Once home I unwrapped the cellophane only to find a long single hair strand that an employee "lost" that ended up in there. I chucked it out as going back to exchange it would have meant an argument and for 3.00 I can't be bothered. I am guessing hair nets have not made it yet to this Soviet era style store. I can put up with unfriendly store staff on occasion but no one should put up with a store not practicing the minimum food safety measures . Stores are legally obliged to have staff...
Read moreThis store has a lot of freshness issues. They keep selling expired products. I bought expensive chocolates from Russia a couple of weeks ago, and when I opened two chocolates, there were live worms inside! Many other less shocking, yet not less unpleasant experiences, whether you buy a can of coffee or especially products from the deli department -- freshness is rarely there. Although the attitude of the store has recently changed towards being less offensive towards clients, avoid buying there, especially for special occasions -- I feel awful at the thought that the choclates I put in a gift box for someone may have worms in them, like the ones I left for...
