I was in the mood for some Crotonese cheese as well as some Cacciocavallo - some Kefalotyri cheese would have been nice, too! "Opa!" Naturally I went to the shop where they boast "500 cheeses from all over the world". Guess what? Sold out. All three selections. (Coincidence or what?) 497 cheese selections now.
Service was very helpful and friendly. It is a nicely laid out shop 'cept for the ceiling treatment with this frothy bubbly blown-in insulation themfrie. The friendly associate behind the counter seemed to really know her stuff and this place, going back to their Kensington Market days, is famous for offering you a slice of their delectable assortments to sample - and they still do!
It is pricey, though. The cheeses I selected came out to six or seven dollars for 100-gram chunks. That's $60.00 or $70.00 a kilo for their cheeses! Oh well, food is expensive everywhere, right?
Any way, I leave with a bag comprised of two long "Rea" Casalingo salamis (yummy!), two 100-gram chunks of cheese and a small jar of marmalade from the Dalmatian coastline in Croatia. Almost $40.00!! Four items. Not even half a bag of groceries! Cheese and salami - the gastronomy of peasants once upon a time!
So days later I unwrap the cheeses and they turned dark brown, dried-out and kind of shrivelled in texture. And hard - good for making sandals!
To the store's credit, there was an adhesive sticker on the wrapping advising consumers how to properly store their cheese. (When was the last time you bought pricey cheese with instructions attached?)
My point is that at $60.00 or $70.00 a kilo, why not wrap the cheese customers are buying in cellophane at point of purchase? - just as the attached instructions prescribe?
I'd include pictures but the old lady tossed the smelly stuff out.
Back I go to Co$tco with much less selection and cheese I can enjoy just a few days after purchase. (And no attached instructions on a tiny...
Read more1 year ago my sister & I went into Global Cheese to find cheese to host a cheese tasting. It's the first time we'd ever held a cheese tasting, but I had been to a Dairy Farmers of Canada tasting at the Royal Winter Fair, so I had a handout with me to plan. Jennifer was great. She suggested going out of my comfort zone and trying a wide variety of cheeses from different countries.
The party was such a great hit that we went back again this year to do it again. Even though it was a really busy day, Jennifer took time to let us taste each cheese before buying, and then wrote the origin, order of tasting, and suggested accompaniment (red wine, white wine, or beer) for each cheese. We bought enough cheese what in a big box store it would have EASILY been over $110. Instead, it was around $95.
If you're a cheese lover, you HAVE to try this place. The cheese is fresh, the service is great, and the price is...
Read moreThis place is the absolute best!! This is my fourth time coming here and it’s by far my fav cheese shop. I come all the way from Orangeville to get my cheese fix along with other goodies. The staff are super friendly, very knowledgeable and helpful in recommending product. They always offer you a sample of what you ask for which is great because that way you know what you are buying!! They are reasonably priced compared to other specialty shops or grocery stores so it is definitely worth the weekly drive for me. There is no way this speciality cheese shop can be compared to Costco or any other grocery store.. They carry a wide variety of cheeses which you can get as much as you like and it is always fresh!! See you guys...
