This is just one of the many sad stories at the Bayeux War Cemetery, Sapper G W Whorlow killed on the 24th August 1944 aged just 31.
We visited in November 2019, 75 years after D-Day and just after Rememberance Sunday and I saw the poppies left at his grave side.
The message was simple...
My Daddy, loved always, Margaret.
Hopefully many of the other brave service men & women are visited by their loved ones. Undoubtedly an amazing story, did Margaret ever know her Daddy, how old was she when he died?
But hopefully by those visiting, whether families, friends or simply those wishing to remember their brave sacrifice, they know that their sacrifice didn't go unnoticed and has not been forgotten.
Thank you. Sleep well.
The cemetery is well maintained, with approx 4,000 soldiers (I can't recall the exact number), including over 300 unknown buried here. The view by the main road looks towards the nearby Bayeux Cathedral which is very impressive. The cemetery is worth a visit for an hour or two or just five minutes. If only to say thank you.
Returned in September 2022. To be able to wander amongst these brave men & women pf all ages and of so many nationalities and to pay my respect and to remember them is the least that I can do. The cemetery is well maintained & cared and long may that continue. I remain forever grateful for their...
Read moreThe memorial is a stunning and very moving tribute to those brave men who paid a terrible price for the freedom we can enjoy in the western world. To see a D day veteran on our visit was an unexpected privilege. As a memorial it merits 5 stars + The one star is because in the huge parking area it is necessary to phone in and pay 3€ to park a car. What a nightmare when the bank then want to send an OTC that does not come through to validate a tiny payment. We gave up after wasting 15 minutes in trying to make the payment. It says the money goes towards the memorial costs. Fine and admirable. On the walk back to the car park from the memorial there is a discrete contactless card reader for making a 6€ donation for the same purpose....very easy. Get rid of the phone in parking service and install a simple cash/card machine. In the meantime we await the argument about the parking charge and any fine...
Read moreMy visit to this cemetery in June 2024 during the 80 year remembrance of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy was a chilling and humbling experience. So many lives were shed and paid to bring about peace in the World. May we never have to go through a war like this again. And yet, at this moment the Ukraine is involved in a dragged out war with Russia. And already thousands of children, women & men were killed in Gaza in the war with Israel 😭😭😭
“From Wikipedia …The Bayeux War Cemetery is the largest Second World War cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, located in Bayeux, Normandy.1] The cemetery contains 4,648 burials, mostly from the Invasion of Normandy.
