St. Jacobi was founded between 1361 and 1368 as a Gothic hall church—a spacious structure with aisles of equal height. Its 72-meter tower, completed in 1433, long served as an important landmark for travelers. However, in 1721, a fire broke out in the tower, destroying its spire. It was replaced with an unusual Baroque-style wooden half-timbered structure and a dome, giving the church its unique silhouette.

From Medieval Frescoes to Modern Stained Glass: • The main altar was likely created during the church's heyday, around the late 15th century. • In the 1980s, the renowned artist Johannes Schreiter added abstract stained-glass windows, creating a striking contrast with the ancient walls. • During restoration work, frescoes from 1480 were discovered hidden beneath layers of plaster. They were carefully restored, revealing biblical scenes and intricate patterns.

Trials Over Time: War, Stables, and the Threat of Demolition: • During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the church was repurposed as a warehouse and stable. • In the 19th century, city authorities planned to demolish St. Jacobi, but local citizens fought to preserve it, proving its cultural significance. • The 1490 bell still rings from the tower today—one of the oldest in the region.

St. Jacobi Today: Spirituality and Music: • Today, the church remains an active Lutheran parish and a cultural venue. Its organ and acoustics attract musicians from across Europe.
