Poki is the ancestral home of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, the doyen of Assamese culture. Constructed in 1874 by Hari Bilash Agarwalla,grand father of Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, Poki was one of the first pucca houses in Tezpur. The architecture of Poki is a subtle blend of Rajasthani and Ahom styles. The walls of 2ÂŊ feet thickness are made of small flat bricks. There is a 50X 20 rectangular courtyard in centre of the house with flat stones laid in floor.
The Agarwalla family which migrated from Rajasthan got fully assimilated in Assamese society and produced some of the most illustrious personalities in Ananda Chandra, Paramananda, Chandra Kumar and Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla. They were harbingers of Assamese cultural renaissance. Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla was poet, dramatist, literateur, artist, musician film-maker and freedom fighter. He went to jail a number of times during freedom movement. He made first Assamese film Joymoti at Poki. People of Assam conferred upon him the title "Rupkonwar". Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla died here on 17th January, 1951.
Poki had been host to galaxy of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Rai, Motilal Nehru, Madan Mohan Malviya, Aruna Asaf Ali, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Raja Gopalachari, Acharya Narendra Dev, etc during Freedom Movement.
The Agarwalla family handed over the building and its premises to Government of Assam in 1977 for its preservation as a monument. In 1978 Jyoti Bharati a cultural centre was setup and housed at Poki. In 1982 the State Public Works Department under took renovation of Poki.
In 2002, Sonitpur District Administration undertook renovation of Poki out of funds provided from MPLADS of Shri Moni Kumar Subba M.P. The renovation has not disturbed original character of...
