Just say it : Sargede , and every Solo citizens know what does it means , that is Pasar gede Hardjonagoro . It becomes iconic heritage of Solo , and gives pride to the citizens . Moreover it's claimed as the cleanest market throughout Central Java , and it's true , the floor is dry and quite clean , and items offered are neatly arranged in its kiosks . The location is very strategic , in the center of Solo city , close to Solo town-hall and Tugu Pemandengan , the zero-kilometer point of Solo . This pasar was built in 1927 - 1930 and designed by the Dutch architect Thomas Karsten , and can be seen its beauty . It's also close enough to the other heritage of Solo , just take a walk and you will find Benteng Vastenburg (fortress) and Kraton Kasunanan (palace). The commodities or items that are offered in another market , also available in here e.g : vegetables , meat , food-stuff , fruits , household items etc , but the difference is in the quality , here is better and so , is more expensive , and it doesn't matter for many people . Sargede is also well-known for its ready to eat/drink culinary items e.g. : pecel , aneka oseng , cabuk rambak , nasi liwet , karak , intip , es dawet yu Dermi , gempol pleret , aneka seninjong etc . I just want to highlight one item of snack that already obsolete in another area or market , that is : godril . I , myself , amazed & surprised that godril is available here ! Godril is a kind of snack that is made from "trembesi" seeds , dry-fried . It resembles to "kwaci" , but kwaci is made from watermelon seeds. Anyone that never know what is godril , please try its sensation when eating this godril , it's good as snack while watching TV ! In front of Sargede , across the road , there is an old klenteng , Klenteng Tien Kok Sie , that's still in operation as a worshiping place . Sargede is located in kampung Balong , Surodiprajan , a Chinese-kampung in Solo . So , Sargede can be considered as the melting-pot of Chinese and Javanese culture . It can be seen during Imlek , chinese new-year , Sargede and its surrounding , is full of chinese ornament , colorful lantern and show its beauty during night time ! As a conclusion , don't forget to visit Sargede if...
Read morePasar Gedhe Solo is definitely a haven for traditional market food, It’s a perfect place for tourists who are looking to explore local culinary gems. The people around the market are generally friendly, and the prices are still super affordable. Just like any other traditional market, it’s pretty packed and the traffic can get quite messy, especially since some of the streets are used for parking.
The food court on the second floor actually has a nice variety of options, but sadly, the seating area is quite limited. Honestly, this market might not be the best place if you’re hoping to eat in peace. While I was eating, I was approached by street vendors and buskers more than five times. It’s something you need to be ready for if you decide to eat there.
What really disappointed me was the uncomfortable and intimidating experience I had with a group of buskers. There was a misunderstanding which I was simply taking a picture of the market to show my friends the update about our sitting place, but all the buskers suddenly confronted me and demanded that I should delete the photo because his was in it. I immediately admitted my mistake and apologized, but the way they approached me felt overly aggressive.
Ironically, there’s actually a warning sign on the first floor from the local authorities about these buskers, which makes me think this might not be a one-time thing. Honestly, this kind of experience can really ruin an otherwise good visit. I really hope the management and local government can pay more attention to this issue and make the market safer and more enjoyable for...
