Oguma Photo Studio (高田小熊写真館) was originally constructed in 1908 in the town of Takada (now part of Jōetsu) in Niigata Prefecture. The studio was relocated to Meiji Mura in 1982. The building is a two-story wooden structure with a gabled roof. A distinctive feature is the large north-facing skylight, which provided ideal natural lighting for the photography studio located on the second floor. The first floor housed the owner’s living quarters, a waiting room for clients, and a photographic darkroom. Oguma Photo Studio served the local community as well as the 58th Infantry Regiment of the Japanese Army stationed in Takada. After being relocated to Meiji Mura, the building was restored and now showcases original equipment and early 20th-century photographs, offering insight into the history and development of photography in Japan.
