Uji-yamada Post Office — Attraction in Inuyama

The Uji-Yamada Post Office was originally constructed in 1909 in Uji-Yamada (now Ise City), Mie Prefecture. The post office was situated near the outer shrine of the Ise Grand Shrine and was serving as a vital hub for mail, telegraph, and telephone services during the Meiji era.

The building showcases a distinctive Western-style design uncommon for its time. It features a central circular hall topped with a conical dome, flanked by two V-shaped wings. The façade includes two small towers with domed roofs on either side, reflecting a blend of European architectural influences. Constructed primarily of wood, the structure is adorned with copper roofing. The exterior walls exhibit a half-timbered style, combining plaster and weatherboard finishes, with intricate plaster reliefs enhancing the transom areas. To safeguard its historical integrity, the post office was relocated to Meiji Mura in 1969, where it has been meticulously preserved and restored. 宇治山田郵便局舎は、もともと三重県伊勢市に位置し、明治42年（1909年）に建設された建物です。現在は愛知県犬山市の博物館明治村に移築・保存されています。

この建物は、木造平屋建てで銅板葺きの屋根を持ち、中央には円錐ドーム形の屋根、両翼には寄棟の屋根が配置されています。外観はハーフティンバー様式で、漆喰塗りと下見板張りの壁が組み合わされ、正面の左右には小さなドームを載せた角塔が特徴的です。

内部に入ると、円形の「公衆溜」と呼ばれるホールがあり、その周囲を窓口カウンターが囲んでいます。ホールの天井は高く設計され、高窓から自然光が差し込む構造となっています。

また、東翼部の背面には切手倉庫があり、レンガ積みの壁で囲まれ、防火対策が施されています。

この宇治山田郵便局舎は、明治時代の本格的な木造郵便局舎として唯一現存する貴重な建物であり、平成11年（1999年）には国の重要文化財に指定されています。

修復成った宇治山田郵便局舎を初めて訪ねました。綺麗になったのは勿論ですが、以前は無かった集配人の控室・宿直室、切手倉庫など創建当初の姿が復元されているようです。 展示施設もリューアルされていました。展示は郵便の歴史を紹介したものですが、とても素晴らしいです！郵便制度こそ文明開化の象徴と言わんばかりの郵便制度の充実にかける明治政府の意気込みを感じました。見ているうちにかつて大河ドラマ「青天を衝け」で前島密や杉浦譲や渋沢栄一たちが郵便制度を作るために四苦八苦していたシーンを思い出しました。今では空気のように当たり前になった郵便制度ですが今日に至るまでに多くの先人たちの苦労と努力があったのだなと改めて感じました。ここには多くの人に...
