Tucked along the bustling Kokusai-dori in Naha, Shionosenmonten Shioya is more than just a shop — it’s a fascinating deep dive into Okinawa’s love for salt. The store specializes in snacks, sweets, and soft serve ice cream, all made using locally harvested Okinawan sea salt. That’s right — even the soft serve ice cream has salt in it, and to my surprise, it was absolutely delicious! The salt brought out the sweetness in such a unique way.

We sampled a few of their signature treats and ended up buying quite a bit — from salted cookies to salt rice crackers. There were also beautiful salt-themed gift sets that make perfect souvenirs for family and friends back home. The packaging was elegant and very “Okinawa.”

The staff were friendly and very generous with samples, explaining the differences in each type of salt used. You could tell they were passionate about their craft and proud of the local ingredients they work with.

Super interesting experience + yummy to have milk soft serve with 6 varieties of salt. Salt makes ice cream even yummier. Our favorite salt options are (1) matcha (2) hibiscus (3) citrus.
