Be sure to arrive early as there will probably be a line. Also, be sure to correct the consulate staff if they mispronounce your name. I’m giving two stars because my last name was spelled incorrectly on my receipt and was mispronounced twice when announced by two different staff members despite my name being spelled correctly on all of the documents I prepared.
The applicant that received service before me was asked by a staff member if she had pronounced the applicant’s name correctly. However, I was not asked this same question. I feel that it would be great if the consulate staff could implement two things: 1) asking each applicant if they've pronounced the applicant’s name correctly, 2) if they've spelled the name correctly before printing the receipt.
I think adding these two things to their procedure would greatly improve the experience for those involved and reduce mistakes.
It was only after my appointment, that I discovered my name was spelled incorrectly on the receipt given to me. But luckily, I was still in the area and was able to resolve the issue with another staff member. I had to be persistent to correct the issue and I appreciate that staff member for accommodating.
To other applicants, particularly those with non-European, Asian last names that are not Japanese, such as myself, don’t be afraid to correct the staff if they mispronounce your name because they might also misspell it as well. I regret not doing so in the moment. To be honest, this issue hurt my experience with this consulate and what was supposed to be a fun day trip.
Aside from the above, I was able to complete the service I came for and the security officers were professional and the security check...
Read moreIn and out within an hour. Now I will say that the staff did a great job, they were fast and courteous. For that, they get 5 well earned stars. However, the whole "don't bring x,y, or z" rules and regulations are aweful if not inane. Coming in from out of town of course you're going to have bags/luggage. But, you can't take them with you, not even a backpack. No cellphones inside, but you can check 1 phone with Security. Oh yes, my favorite of all no drinks. It was like Florida weather today, and I'm a big guy, I need H2O or I'm going to dehydrate. Thankfully, they do have a water cooler inside. Although I understand the reason behind these rules and regs, I don't agree with the water issue or a reasonably sized backpack. So, one star for that. Lastly, have all your ducks in a row: pics, birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, forms filled out etc... Can't tell you how many people were not even allowed to submit their documents because they forgot pictures, or filled out their forms wrong. Good luck y'all!
Addendum: 2 weeks and all is well in the world. Damn, that was fast! See y'all in 5-10...
