Lucky cats everywhere! Peaceful and worth the visit. You might be lucky enough to catch their cat themed train to the station.

Their shop closes early so if you want to buy a lucky charm cat be sure to get there before 15:00 hours, they might even sell...

江戸時代の初期、井伊直孝が馬で遠乗りに出たところ、この寺にさしかかった時に何やら手招きする様子がするので誰だろう?と思い確認しに行くと、猫だったとわかり、立ち去ろうとしたところ、奥からお勤めを終えた住職が出てきて茶をすすめられたそうだ。そこににわか雨が降ってきたので、住職のすすめにあまえることにして、茶を飲むことにしたが、その住職が禪気に満ちた人だとわかり直孝はそこを菩提寺に定めたそうだ。それにより、廃寺同様に荒れた寺が復興したそうです。いわゆる、招き猫の由来になるんですが、この時、直孝は井伊直政の次男で、井伊家は兄の直勝が継ぐことになっていて、上州碓氷一万石の領主として分家する為に菩提寺が必要だったらしい。しかし、直勝が早世したため井伊家を継ぐことになり、直孝にも福が訪れたようだ。この猫は住職の飼い猫で、死んだ後、(招福猫児)という戒名を与えられて境内に埋葬されたらしい。豪徳寺という名は、直孝の法名なんだそうです。　＊禪気とは禅宗における無我の境地　＊法名...
