The General Library was built in Showa 3 (1928) to a design by Professor Uchida Yoshikazu (later University of Tokyo President). The original University Library was totally destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1st, Taisho 12 (1923), and the 700,000 books it held were lost at the same time. The collection included priceless materials inherited from forerunners of the University such as the Kaisei Gakkou, Medical School and Tokugawa period schools. The reconstruction of the General Library was carried out with a donation of 4 million yen from John Rockefeller Jr. This would be worth approximately 10 billion yen at current prices. The League of Nations issued a resolution calling for support in re-establishing the collection, which was rebuilt with donations both from within Japan and overseas. Opened to the public, but if you are not students/non-affiliated citizens, to enter you have to register first. Office hour including reference room is on from 9AM to 5PM (only weekday), so be careful when to visit depending on your purpose. Microfilm service is a little difficult to figure out, but generally speaking, things are easy. Great place to study or...
