The Buddhist temple of Wat That Luang Neua dates back to the 17th century and was one of the four "Guardian Wats of the Phra That Luang. Today only two of these guardian temples survive, the other being Wat That Luang Tai located to the south of the Phra That Luang. Over the years, Wat That Luang Neua has undergone several major renovations, each reflecting the cultural and political shifts of the times. The temple interior is magnificent with beautifully carved and gilded windows and the double entrance doors. The Hall is lofty and is decorated in dark red, mirroring the window frames.
