If you’re in Seremban and have some time to spare for a leisurely daytime meal, make a beeline for the Negeri Sembilan Hainan Association. RM10 should satisfy more than just your tummy in something more than just a coffee shop.
The first thing you notice on the ground floor is how the walls are make a hall of heritage— notes on the Hainan language, origin stories, photos the of clan association’s forbears, proverbial sayings that express cherished values — I couldn’t help but wander along the displays to find out about this Chinese subculture that is so much more than just chicken rice.
My hunger for knowledge satiated, I turn my attention to breakfast. Full-flavoured Hainanese-style coffee rounds off old-fashioned kaya toast - with real butter, a rarity in traditional coffee shops. Then again, their coffee can also close traditional 豬肉粉 (noodles with pork in soup), 瓦煲老鼠粉 (braised claypot noodles), 咖哩雞麵 (curry chicken noodles) or a variety of 糕 (cakes and tartlets) or 燒包 (baked dumplings). The food is generally good value for money, quickly served and always authentic.
