Mario and his outfit positively MADE our Cozumel trip. I had contacted him a few weeks before my family’s arrival and I immediately had a good feeling about him. He patiently answered all of my questions and helped me to navigate everything from where to go eat in town to how much to tip, where to avoid, other excursion ideas and he even went as far as offering to show us around the island. The fishing excursion was as comfortable as it was spectacular. While no bites are ever guaranteed, Mario picked us up at our hotel pier and confidently navigated out to his known spots where we promptly caught no fewer than a dozen fish. For my son who positively loves to fish, this excursion with Mario will endure as one of my family’s core memories. His 1st mate Miguel cleaned the fish on our return trip to the hotel and they suggested a restaurant where they’d cook our fish 3 ways (ceviche, tacos and deep fried) and it only cost $12 USD a head. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Then on his day off Mario met my family and took us on a 3-hour tour (this time by truck) of Cozumel island. We visited El Cedral which is a charming, off the beaten path town with Mayan significance. We then visited no fewer than 3 beach parks on the east side of the island which he loves so much he brings his own family. After lunch we headed back to our hotel via el Centro, the main town where island locals like him live and eat. We had gone to a number of the restaurants he’d suggested before we arrived and so it was nice driving back through the town with him and to talk about the places we’d visited on his recommendations as we drove past them. Our last stop was at an ice cream shop owned by a friend of his which he runs out of his home. I kid you not it was the best ice cream (coconut flavour no less) we have ever had and the cones were equally satisfying. A fitting end to a beautiful day in a beautiful place with this beautiful soul, Mario. So from our family in Vancouver, Canada muchisimas gracias, amigo Mario for showing us what Cozumel hospitality looks and feels like. If you are planning on visiting the island and you wish to fish do yourself a favour and get in touch with Mario. I will forever be glad I did! Cliff Shim Vancouver, Canada P.S. best churros of my life we got from a street vendor Mario suggested. If you want memorable churros, ask him where.

If you’re looking for the best fishing experience in Cozumel, Mario and Frank are the team to go with! Mario speaks excellent English, is super respectful, and knows these waters like the back of his hand. Frank is an outstanding fisherman, and together, they make an incredible duo. From the moment we stepped on the boat, they were on top of everything—baiting hooks instantly, untangling lines, and keeping us on the fish. And trust me, we caught plenty! Lots of triggerfish, a beautiful parrotfish, and some snapper. Their equipment was top-notch, with sharp hooks, fresh bait, and everything needed for a successful trip. They also had beers, sodas, and water on board, making the experience even better. Mario was on time, ready to go, and had a great attitude the whole time. Plus, his prices were very fair—way better than the bigger companies, which we tried before and had a much worse experience. If you’re in Cozumel and want a fantastic fishing trip with guys who truly care about making it a great experience, book with Mario aboard the abrimar boat. You won’t regret it!

We went fishing with Captain Mario and First Mate Frank today and have to say we had the best experience ever. We did the morning reef fishing for four hours. Mario asked if we would like to snorkel on a reef that was close to the Marina on our way home. We excitedly said yes. Even though our 4 hours were up he said “ I have no afternoon fishing trip booked today and would love for us to see the reef”. We snorkeled for an hour on an amazing reef and then went back to the Marina where Mario cooled up all the fish right at his dock area. He is an amazing cooked up grilled snapper, freah guacamole, ceviche (our fish also) and grilled vegetablesand tortillas!! We loved the whole day. I’m sure he can’t offer all that to all customers but I would hugely recommend this adventure to all who want a wonderful experience!
