This was our first visit to Mexico City and as part of the experience, I booked us on the Taste Colonia Roma with Local Foodies tour.
When I booked this tour, I had only in mind that we would taste some local food -- we actually received so much more than that.
Paola was our guide and she was exceptional. I've been on tours before and usually encountered one of two sorts of guides: 1). The guide that drones on as if reading from script and rushing you from one spot to the other or 2). The overly familiar guide who talks more about themselves than what you're trying to see. Paola was neither; she was utterly engaging, very knowledgeable, interested in our feedback and preferences and very approachable.
Paola helped us better understand the area we were staying in (also Roma Norte) from its history, to its architecture and public spaces, to the people and business who occupy the neighborhood. She was additionally able to answer all our questions (we had many) and give us helpful tips we put to use for the rest of our 5-day stay.
I really believe with the information Paola provided in hand, we were better able to appreciate where we were, what we were seeing, how it came to be and who lived there.
Paola took us to seven different places each with its own cuisine but all equally delicious. From tacos, to enchiladas, to tamales, to modern Mexican cuisine as well as craft beer and coffee we got to experience some truly unique things I will remember forever. Despite the fact that I am the sort of person who researches everything, I can confidently say that without Paola and this tour, we would never have found these seven places and our Mexico City experience would have been lesser for it.
Mexico City is a huge place and if you've never been there before or don't know someone there, it's easy to miss the places and experiences that will deepen your experience and elevate your understanding of the place. This tour and Paola's guidance set the tone for the rest of the trip which ended up being very rich and memorable despite the short amount of time we had.
Do yourself a favor and book this tour. I know there are other guides but I didn't meet them; I'm sure they're great but my suggestion is that if you can book Paola, you should. PS: I've included actual photos taken...
Read moreA highpoint of our visit to Mexico City was the 3-hour walking food tour of the City’s beautiful and historic Colonia Roma neighborhood. One of several food tours run by “Sabores Mexico Food Tours,” it included a half dozen highly varied Mexican restaurants over a walk of about 1.5 miles. The restaurants ranged from simple, informal, and almost rustic, to sophisticated, chic and polished; but the food and drink was excellent in all. The food also covered several regions of Mexico and multiple historical epochs (pre-Columbian to very contemporary).
But what made the experiences extra special was the young woman, Stephanie, who guided us from destination to destination and kept us great company as we ate and drank. Stephanie not only could share detailed information and insights about the ingredients and preparation of each dish, she also used her iPad to show fascinating photos of the people and history of Colonia Roma, and the dishes. She was equally adept at explaining the various regions and states of Mexico where the dishes originated and how much they differed from each other. Finally, and most enjoyably for my wife and me, she is a professional architect, stopping at numerous buildings along the way to discuss architectural styles (several fabulous examples of Art Nouveau!) and the history of how the community’s style and...
Read moreWhat an awesome experience. My review is a little different as I am a gringo leaning Spanish, so I booked my wife and I on the Spanish walking tour. I wanted some immersion. It turned out that we were the only ones who booked the Spanish tour. Joss arrives and I explain the issue in my broken Spanish. Her English is fantastic...she says she has been learning it from 6 years old! But I digress... the tour was entertaining, but educational also, and of course, very tasty. You probably wont want to fill up with breakfast because you get to taste A LOT of Mexican cuisine from all regions of Mexico. All time with Joss explaining it first in Spanish, then again in English for my wife. Joss went the extra mile and was basically my Spanish teacher for the day. All in all, I think the visit the huge market was my favorite. There are so many things to be found there. We had some ceviche and shimp and I think Oaxaca cheese on toast at a small sit down corner stall/restaurant in the market. My wife like that one best too. As we would walk from place to place, Joss would point out historical sites and give us the background. My advice to Sabores Mexico Food Tours is maybe off a Spanish Immersion Tour for English people like me who want to learn/practice their Spanish. What a fun way to tour the...
