Came with a date and started with an order of Mezcal. The waiter brought out 3 bottles and my date chose 1 shot from one bottles, I chose 1 from a different bottle for variety. I also ordered a coke. The Mezcal was delicious and fun to sip and analyze the subtle flavors. However, the coke never came.
Next, I ordered the ribeye and a side of French fries with a mayonnaise dip and politely reminded him about the coke again. My date ordered the seared Ahi.
When the food arrived, it was literally colder than room temperature,… except for the mayonnaise, because he forgot to bring it.
Sent everything back to be reheated, including my dates meal and It came back a bit hotter, but again without the mayonnaise, so I politely asked for it again.
Mayonnaise finally came 10 minutes later, just in time to dip the now room temperature fries into. Had to send the fries back again to reheat.
Steak was tender but mediocre because they never flipped it during the cooking process. One side was blackened and the other side was gray. It was served with a grilled onion about the size of a cherry tomato, but it lacked seasoning so it was tasteless. Maybe it was supposed to be a garnish?
When the bill arrived, I was shocked to see that they charged me $21 for one shot of Mezcal, and $11 for the other. The $21 shot of Mezcal cost more than my ribeye steak. Apparently the waiter decided to bring us the most expensive Mezcal in the restaurant and didn’t let us know. The menu listed cocktails which were all much less than $10, so I didn’t question the cost. Also the menu didn’t list the price for a shot their priceless tequila.
That was a fitting ending for a mediocre meal that was repeatedly served cold, with forgotten dishes, from a waiter who apparently has the short term memory of a goldfish that rides the short bus to his school (of fish).
When I paid the waiter with my credit card, he asked how much of a tip to add to the bill, at which point I pointed to the Mezcal on the bill and said, “No tip because I spent all my money of that tequila”. When he ran my card, he decided to add his own tip, hoping I wouldn’t notice, so I had to call for the manager to void it and re-run the bill.
All in all, it was a pretty lousy and frustrating experience and I would never recommend this place, nor go back again, even if the food was free.
One more thing to mention. This was a Wednesday night, not even a busy...
Read moreOverall terrible experience. We went there to celebrate a birthday, we were having dinner. Service was poor and unfriendly, waiter did not have attitude of service, he kept handing us plates, silverware and beverages to place on the table ourselves, when he was picking something from the table he kept crossing in front of our faces without even asking for permission. Food lower than average, not an exceptionally delicious meal, we had to return a plate because the meat did not taste good at all, then the manager came back to tell us they tried it and it was good, completely dismissing our claim, which we thought was rude; soup was served at the same time as the main course, we had to ask them to wait. Atmosphere was not great, not a great pick of music, there was a rotation of people singing on the street but it sounded really loud inside the restaurant, it was hard to have a conversation. To get to the bathroom you have to walk past the kitchen entrance, waiters are not careful when coming out of the kitchen in case a diner is walking past, I almost crashed with one of them. Talking about the bathroom, it could use cleaning, papel towel dispenser did not work and there was nothing else to dry your hands with. It’s terribly sad to go out to dinner and on a special occasion to not have a great time; whether you spend a lot of money or not, the experience should always be nice the food great and service as welcoming as possible. It is also disappointing to be treated in such a manner when you can see other “regular” diners and foreigners being taken care of in a completely different and better way. We will never go back. Hopefully someone will read this and take action on it. If you are planning to dine here, I suggest you find a...
Read moreSome of the bad reviews on this restaurant must be from cranky old foreigners, they love to complain. I know this because I am a foreigner, but this is the only foreigner review you need to take seriously. I chose this restaurant for a date night with a friend before he was leaving town for the holidays and we absolutely enjoyed our time. The service was wonderful, our waiter was always perceptive and aware of our needs. We didn't need to ask for anything because as any good waiter he instinctively knew what the guest wanted without needing to be asked. We ordered two appetizers, two soups, two meals, shared a dessert, had two beers and two cocktails. Of all that we ordered, there wasn't anything that we didn't think was just wonderful. The food was amazing and what you would expect from a moderately priced restaurant. My background is in culinary arts and used to be a restaurant consultant before moving to Mexico, so I have some knowledge on the subject. I almost canceled my reservations after reading some of these unwarranted negative reviews by a bunch of crabby foreigners. I am glad I didn't. I highly recommend this restaurant. The only negative word I would say is that we sat outside close to the sidewalk and there were a lot of vendor and people begging for money, but I have lived in Mexico for 15 year and this is just standard. I wish restaurants would do more to chase vendors and beggars away, but it always seems to be something restaurants accept, unfortunately. So plan a date at Nonna, but maybe ask not to be on the sidewalk tables, sit a little further into the restaurant if you don't want people interrupting your conversation...
