I am removing my 2 star rating to 1 star. Id purchased crab and the lady had actually changed my package while I went to get more cash from my husband. There was 6 fully rotten crabs in my package the legs were gone there was 6 bodies and a few legs all of Which were black and mush. So this wasn't just rotting or started to get rotten but fully rotten and sold intentionally to me this way. One of the bodies the top shell had been removed halfway so I am confident that this was not what I'd selected and had weighed for me because this was much larger than the amount of crab id chosen. This is my 3rd bad experience at this fish market for this month of Dec and I have come to realize all of these vendors are cunning and trying to trick their customers in some way or the other. I will not be returning to this place. Our Christmas lunch was ruined and my money wasted. So I've actually paid for this stress and trouble. Disgusting people and very shady businesses. On this same day I'd purchased sheep head at a different stall and there they tried to rob me by selling me at a higher price than another customer aswell as the lady cutting my sheep head was stealing the pieces to put into another try for which they sell those prepack trays. So definitely watch out for this place and...
Read moreThis is a most wonderful, bustling, captivating market where you can buy anything from African jewellery, shoes and clothes, smartphones and local food, to fruit & veg & fish & meat (including whole heads of cows or sheep which are apparently boiled whole for hours - bon appetit!), also spices etc. Great atmosphere! Veg market is open 24/7 (apparently, the marketenders effectively live in their stalls...). Pop into adjacent Muti (= medicine) market to buy whatever you need for spells and potions...(dried snake skins anybody?) Lots of shops and streetstalls in the area, too. Safety: not an issue during the day. Didn't feel unsafe at all. Just wouldn't flash valuables around, but this goes for all of S.A., it's perfectly safe in my view, and I'm a white woman. Me and my 2 white friends were the only whites there, and all was fine. Only problem: not everybody speaks English. Note to self: learn a...
Read moreIndeed a tourist attraction!!! Authentic Durban flavors in all types of arts, crafts, traditional wear and many types of fruits, vegetables, butchery, fishmonger electrical and appliances. Prices are keen and traders are friendly, I don't bargain with the hard working stall holders as their work is laborious. I love the spice emporium, about twenty years back, Mr. Govender, covered in his spices, blended me a fish masala that was a hit with my barracuda fish curry with baby brinjals and fresh garlic in a rich tamarind dhania curry sauce. Customers used to lick their fingers!!! Well worth a visit!!! Be vigilant and street smart. At times the cleanliness is much to be desired, especially during this striking and mismanagement of state coffers!!! At least at grass roots levels the People try to keep...
