Caters to the overseas visitors in terms of cost, but make use of some of the specials available to locals and you can get in on this highly recommendable trip.
Firstly, the experience is worth it. I have gone up early in the day and at sunset and any time you go, the cable car experience itself is well run and the views from up top are spectacular.
Take a camera! Take a bottle of something special if you like (definitely an idea for a unique moment) or a tasty treat to snack on while you're up there, soaking in the views from a nice quiet ledge.
The facilities up top are good, but I find no need to make use of the overpriced (for locals anyway) cafe up top. The gift shop is nice, it has some good items in, but many (not all) of the items can be found at other tourist spots throughout Cape Town. Do not feel too left out if you missed out on buying a souvenir up there. Rather enjoy the views and take a few photos than indulging in material mementos.
It is not the cheapest of Cape Town activities, but it by no means the average tourist activity either. It is a really special thing.
If you are local, there are ways to improve your experience. Book tickets online if you don't mind paying higher prices, there are separate queues for pre-booked tickets, these queues do eliminate virtually all the waiting time.
If you wish to find some specials, look on their website or ask the tourist info desks about them. Students and seniors do get some decent discounts and the Sunset Special (after 6pm) is rather excellent. The views at that time are stunning and worth the trouble. It is a popular discount, so book online if you can or get there early enough so that you time your queuing just right. Expect an hour or more queue (can be less though) to get tickets, but when timed correctly you'll get up there as the sun goes down. Theres nothing else...

The staff were exceptionally friendly and made the entire experience smooth and enjoyable.
Their professionalism and warm demeanor added a personal touch that made our trip even more memorable. We decided to go early in the morning, which turned out to be a great choice as there was no queue.
This allowed us to make the most of our time at the top, exploring the various viewpoints and taking in the serene beauty of Table Mountain. However, when we descended later in the day, we noticed a long queue of people waiting to go up. It's clear that this attraction is immensely popular, so arriving early is highly recommended.
