It's a busy market in Lavapiés, taking place daily along Calle de Embajadores, in the west of the district, since 1944, with stalls selling everything from farm produce and meat to clothes and books. Besides selling food, there are small restaurants, bars and cafes with local and international flavors. The atmosphere in the afternoon is pleasant, enjoying very good prices with family, friends and colleagues. The facade of the building is its most original feature and gives it a unique character among the city's markets, surprising visitors when they discover a municipal market behind the magnificent entrance. The traditional range of fresh produce typical of municipal markets is combined with a wide commercial offer, from fashion shops to bookstores, as well as a variety of cultural and recreational activities. North of the market, on the main street Calle de Embajadores, the graffiti Mural ""Chimpancé"" de Okuda y Bordalo II is...

A note to the English-reading Googlers: So the Spanish people takes naps in the afternoons. Therefore this Mercado actually closes in the middle of the day (around 4-5pm until 6:30pm) even though the hours say they are opened. The shop owners return around 5:30 to 6pm but don't fully open until 7pm.

I really enjoyed this Mercado! It's my favourite!! It's so small (one floor, I think) and it takes 1 minute to walk from one side to the other.

There's everything you need: a book store! butchers, fruits/vegetables, cheese beer shop (yes! an actual shop) with beers other than Mahou wine store baked sweet goods artisan stores (soaps, jewellery)

In addition to: Carmen, the tiny cafe with outdoor seating. A little overpriced but there's wifi and a clean washroom. I waited here until the Mercado re-opened. Bond 40, a bar and tapas place a...

Our madrilean friends took us there, and it seemed like this was also the activity for all Madrid. Lots of different food stands with mostly Spanish and Latin American cuisines, and most offer some kind of lunch deal. We shared a cachopo platter, a bottle of wine and Venezuelan bites for the 4 of us and paid around 50€ for the whole. Cool atmosphere, but the sitting spots are hard to get ! Like everywhere in Madrid, you learn to make what looks like a 2-persons space, enough to fit 4 plus some space for the food.

Superb little indoor 'market' with numerous street food style eateries and bars. I would have given the place five stars, where it not for the fact the only toilet is only accessible with a key, obtainable off someone who isn't around. Not a good idea when virtually every establishment is serving alcohol. **EDIT** Forget about the toilet rant. Turns out that was the accessible one, that needs a RADAR key. Other toilets are close by, and we were actually sat under the sign directing you to them 🙄
