Super impressed with The boulder bunker, this gym is a true throwback to grass roots climbing! Upon arrival Andy was super friendly, informative and even gave us a quick tour / walk round! We started off in the very well kitted out "training room" which has some moon boards, beast makers, weights etc and is one of a few gyms that still has a climbing lattice. After a warm up we headed into the main climbing area which is a decent side and is lined wall to wall with a variety of climbs all the way from "easy" up to "ludicrous" in difficulty. Each climb had a unique name as well which is a nice touch and added some humour as we made our way round! Andy did specify the grades are set to "V" grade but is not listed on the wall, I appreciated this as it doesn't immediately put you off if you see something of a higher grade. I spent around 2 hours climbing various routes and they were all great fun and well set! Nothing felt too hard or silly. I still had a lot climbs left when I had to leave so there's plenty to go at even on a longer visit. If you're in the Devon area or even further afield and want a more unique old school climbing experience definitely check out the Boulder Bunker, as a climber you will not regret it!
Side note: This is also a great centre for kids as well, Andy runs UV discos and other events which are suited to...
Read moreA unique bouldering experience. My son and I had a great time here today. It was our third straight day climbing and a hot day, so I'd thought we'd been in and out within an hour, but we easily spent two hours here doing lots of interesting problems both for warm up and serious challenges (we are intermediate level). Of course, there were plenty of problems well beyond our ability so I expect advanced / expert climbers will easily find challenges here too. The community also seems super friendly as we ended up getting very welcome tips and encouragement from two other climbers. What made it feel so unique? The building it was in - not a large industrial estate one, but a charming one with history I'm sure, in the city centre; the feel of the gym in general - it just has personality, and in all the right ways; and the training area - it has a lattice board, which I've never seen before (this is our twelfth climbing centre) and another kind of board where you pull out the rods as you go up, inserting them into the holes above as you go (no idea what it's called). Anyway, anyone who is interested in having a different climbing experience should visit here when in...
Read moreThe Bunker is my favourite place to spend my free time. The facilities for training are the best this side of the UK by far so if you’re into training, this place is for you.
The bouldering grading is harder than places nearby but don’t let this put you off as there are plenty of climbs that even beginners (or even little ones) could conquer!
Setting is abundant and re setting is regular so every few weeks or so a wall will be re set.
The owner Alan and the two other staff, Aaron and Jay, are super friendly and you will get on with all of them very well. Aaron is part of the reason I still climb to this day as when I first walked in he answered every question I could think of and started me on my journey so don’t be afraid to ask any of the staff all the questions you have as they are all very knowledgeable.
There is also such a nice and friendly community of climbers here so never feel awkward if you don’t want to climb alone just start a conversation and have some fun.
I thank everyone at bunker so much for making such a nice and friendly environment and am looking forward to the future climbing...
