This place deserves far more than it's received, the local council need to cut unit prices MASSIVELY, I visited last week for the first time in a year or so, it looks like occupancy is as low as around 10% I am assuming this is due to the costs of rent, the side effect of this is foot traffic dies, which in turn kills the remaining units trade.
A lot of work went into making this a lovely place to visit, and it should be a lot more busy, it seems to me that the council must at least in the short term encourage very VERY low rent and short term perhaps even weekly rental contracts to encourage vendors to take a chance.
There are VERY few decent markets left, no flea markets at all, (Wednesday flea markets for 1 day stalls used to be very popular) let's make this a 5 star place again, let's support our local businesses, if left as is no one trying to sell "regular" day to day items can compete with Tesco and the other supermarkets, so let's give the more bespoke & quirky businesses a chance, the 1 man bands, the small family business etc...
The local council are the only group that can save this market, and give the people the ability and tools to succeed. It may be a loss leader in rent, but if you commit to it, it could become an invaluable...
Read moreThis morning I visited this shopping centre. I was pleased that they have started doing some renovation work. There are some rumours that because of Tesco many commercial activities such as Primark, Argos etc have not been able to open due to competition. Honestly if I were the owner of this shopping centre I would not have cared what Tesco says. There are better supermarkets than Tesco and they will surely be happy to be able to replace it and bring some fresh air here in Walkden. Also because in my opinion Tesco is a sad supermarket with rude staff. Not to mention that they always change the locations of the products making the shopping for customers frustrating. Because in their limited logic they think that if a customer changes aisle they can buy more products than necessary... They think they are doing business this way but they are just incompetent.... Because in the end they only make the shopping for us customers more boring and unnerving.... This shopping centre has a lot of potential but unfortunately it is badly managed by incompetent people who do not know how to do business. Continuing to be buckets in the mall in every unsightly corner... few benches... They should put plants, pots or statues to cover the huge void of this sad...
Read moreWalkden town centre is a depressing and very limited and drab town. The few small shops independent and so called empty market are struggling to survive due to the gigantic Tesco that is completely dominating this small town. It anyone ever needed proof of how a big chain supermarket can completely suck the life and character out of a small town , they have the living truth and example in WALKDEN. Which ever planers passed this development should be hung draw and quartered, but as we all know they will never have to answer to the poor pubic who have to live with this huge folly. They are probably sitting pretty in the very attractive Didsbury or somewhere similar. However, I do think the time has come in this, so called democratic country, to start to name and shame these guilty bureaucrats that cause such massive and costly planning mistakes throughout the country . We need a national hot line so that all our brave whistle blowers can help bring about a change In every town, in making all the people that make there bad and very costly decisions answerable to the public. As it is the rate payers who have to suffer indefinitely for their...
