I recently visited Swarthmoor Hall, and what a lovely experience it was! This charming little building from the 17th century is nestled just outside Ulverston, making it a peaceful escape. The rich history of George and Margaret Fell truly adds character, and I found myself fascinated by their story as I explored the quaint surroundings. The gardens are simply delightful—perfect for a leisurely stroll or finding a quiet spot to reflect. After some fresh air, I enjoyed a drink at their cozy café that offered an array of delicious cakes! Everything felt reasonably priced for such quality. Whether rain or shine, Swarthmoor Hall is definitely worth the visit!

Visited Swarthmoor Hall in Ulverston today—a modest 17th-century home with a big place in Quaker history. Once home to Thomas and Margaret Fell, it welcomed frequent visitor George Fox, the movement’s founder. After Thomas’s death, Margaret married Fox, and his carved travel trunk still sits in the bedroom. The house’s dark wood interiors and peaceful gardens offer a quiet glimpse into the past. Not a long visit, but a rewarding one for anyone interested in history and heritage.

We came to visit a historical site for Quakers. I'm so grateful I made it. I hope to come back when the whole site is open and it's not raining. The staff were so hospitable. We walked from Ulverston and I highly recommend if you are able. I'm abit challenged mobility wise but so worth it. We were able to get a taxi for the trip back. The gardens surrounding the manor are beautiful.

This is the 2nd year we’ve stayed at Swarthmoor Hall and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Seven of us met there for our dance retreat, so we’ve used The Old Hall, Hampsfell and Garden Suite units as well as booking their hall. The accommodation is lovely. The rooms are comfortable and newly decorated, the kitchens well equipped and the bathrooms very nice too. The hall itself is a great size and has wonderful acoustics, as well as being airy and light-filled. The grounds are a pure delight. There is a beautiful mature garden at the back of the main house which feels private, even though it’s open to the public Monday to Friday, as well as a lush meadow with a labyrinth laid out and bee hives at the back, a woodland area and a fire pit with wooden benches. However the real cherry on the cake are the team that work there. The office staff are helpful and responsive throughout the booking process and go out of their way to accommodate a group’s needs and Jenny, who heads up housekeeping is fantastic.. super friendly and keen to address any small issues or queries. I would definitely recommend Swarthmoor for someone hoping to host a self-catering retreat..everything already mentioned aside, the place has a wonderful atmosphere and as the birthplace of Quakerism, has a 400 year history of spiritual practice, which embues the place and informs the ethos.. I would also recommend it for a group of families wanting to holiday together and use it as a base to explore Ulverston and the northern lakes and coast. Ulverston itself is an interesting little town with lots of independent shops and cafes and a great Booths supermarket...

We were extremely privileged to be the first guests renting a cottage after major works meant the cottages were closed. As four women ‘of a certain age’, comfort is very important to us and staying in the Wansfell Suite, with 4 bedrooms (each with its own bathroom which is most unusual in cottage hire or Airbnb) and very comfortable, 5 star hotel quality beds. Along with the usual towels, lovely bathrobes were provided which we were very pleased with! The communal kitchen and sitting room downstairs, with direct access to the gardens, provided us with plenty of room and comfortable chairs and sofas on which to lounge & natter while enjoying a morning coffee or evening glass of wine. We loved being able to enjoy the beautiful gardens and the meadow which when we were there were at peak purple crocus bloom. The facilities were spotless and we appreciated the small touches such as the ample washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, tea bags, jams and honey. It was wonderful to wake up to bird song and the babbling brook. As we didn’t have a car, we appreciated that the Hall is only a 12 minute walk via the path through the fields. We found the local taxis very easy to use at nighttime when we needed a lift back from dinner or the pub. We would highly recommend these beautiful and well looked after cottages for everyone wanting a base from which to...
